Scam Buyers on eBay
Why are there so many buyers on eBay, trying to buy items from my eBay site but demanding that I, the seller sells the item away from the eBay platform, and asking me to use PayPal for payments for their own protection?
Or is it just that they do want to have to pay anything to eBay for the use of the platform or is there a scam involved using a fake PayPal platform.
This scenario seems to be getting worse every week, is there a way of seeing the history of a potential eBay buyer or not?

Mentor11 months agoYou cannot get any useful information about a buyer. Everything is now hidden, and they cannot have any feedback other than positive.
You mention running a business, but are selling on ebay as a Private Seller. That will attract scammers, as they do not know you have previous experience, so think you will be easy to persuade to give away goods. You should really register as a business seller before ebay forces it. Trying to get you to use Paypal means you get fake messages saying you have been paid.
Apart from anything else Business Sellers do not have to use the Simple Postage, and their buyers do not get conned into paying the Buyer Protection Fees, which are disliked, and although ebay made concessions, they only benefit low value items, above about £20 it only amounts to about 5p cheaper.

Mentor11 months agoIn 14 years of selling I have never, thankfully, had that request, but I was not selling such high value items as you, and you are a new seller, so a magnet for scam buyers.
Rest assured, eBay scrutinise and read every message going through their system, you will not see any results, but I'm sure some sanctions would be placed on those buyer's accounts.
Definitely ignore, don't even answer those messages, but place them on your blocked buyers list, you do not want their custom, they're trouble !

OP11 months agoNot that new, originally registered in 2002, then after 21 years went away from eBay and returned recently

Mentor11 months agoAaah I was taking the info from the account you are posting from, and this one was opened in March this year.
This is the one where I can see expensive items and those are scam magnets when buyers can see it's a new account.
If you have an older account, with I'd deduce after 21 years a higher feedback score, shift these items there, and I'm sure you will not receive those messages to sell offline ! 🤗

OP11 months agoAs a forth generation dealer, and selling my first piece aged 6, I have always been UK based though travelled worldwide, and I have a high street retail Fine Art & Antique business which again I have had in different location over the years but have been stationary in one location for the last 11 years. But getting on now and slowing down gradually.

That's a great CV ! Fab, but it still shows you have a new account here, on the one you posted on, and that is the one we can only refer to when answering your question, which is selling high value items on an new account = scam magnet for buyers.
As I explained if you have a 20 year old account move those expensive items onto it for the reasons I explained above.
