Sale of diamond ring to the US
Hi, I recently sold a gold diamond and sapphire ring and sent it through GSP to the US, but it was seized by Customs for being in the "restricted item category" without further explanation. I then heard back from the buyer saying that apparently I needed to confirm that the diamonds were not from Russia!. Has anyone heard of this before? Please advise, thank you.

Mentor6 months agoThe regulations on Russian Diamonds is very tight not just in the US but UK and elsewhere under the world sanctions imposed by the invasion of Ukraine. So this no doubt will be why they have been flagged thus.
This page may help from a UK perspective:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/notice-to-importers-2953-russia-import-sanctions/guidance-on-third-country-processed-russian-diamonds-measures
This is part of the US blurb: https://ofac.treasury.gov/faqs/added/2024-02-23
However for compliance the importer may need to provide proof of purchase and country of origin etc. to customs.

Mentor6 months agoI honestly don't see how you can do this, unless the buyer is just asking for something in writing from you stating the country of origin, and that it isn't Russia, that they may be able to pass on to whatever department sent them that message.

Thanks again
