Return policy
Summary: sava_6876, a private seller, raised a concern about eBay's policy requiring sellers to refund the original postage costs on buyer-initiated returns. They explained that if a buyer changes their mind, even though the delivery was completed, the seller is still required to refund the postage, which they consider unfair. sava_6876 requested that eBay review and potentially modify this policy to hold buyers responsible for both the original and return postage costs in such situations.
I would like to formally raise a policy concern regarding original postage refunds on buyer-initiated returns.
I am a private seller. If I sell an item for £800 and charge the buyer £23 for postage, the buyer pays that £23 for a delivery service which is successfully completed.
If the buyer subsequently changes their mind and returns the item, I understand that the buyer can be required to pay the return postage.
However, eBay requires the seller to refund the original £23 postage as well.
This means the seller has paid £23 to the carrier for a delivery that was already completed, the carrier does not refund the seller, yet the seller must refund this amount to the buyer.
I would like to ask eBay to review this policy and consider an option where, when the buyer changes their mind, the buyer is responsible for both the original and return postage costs.
Please escalate this as a policy feedback issue to the appropriate team rather than providing only an explanation of the current policy.
Thank you.

Mentor1 week agoSorry, not going to happen. Refunding outgoing postage is a legal requirement for business sellers, ebay has decided to simplify their systems to make it a requirement for private accounts too.
They have done it this way for years, it's not going to change now.
