Refund or return for altered item?
Summary: my_cherie_amour discussed a situation where a family member, who recently started selling items, listed trousers incorrectly as a size 8 when they were actually a size 6. A customer had them altered before realizing the mistake and requested a refund. my_cherie_amour advised the family member to refund, which has already been done, and sought confirmation if this was the correct action. **peaseblossom** responded that the seller should refund without question if it's their mistake but suggested getting the item back first if desired.
A family member received this message today and I said she should refund. She had listed the item as a size 8 but was in fact a size 6. This is the 2nd time since she started selling recently, she has encountered problems and admittedly this time the error is on her part. Was my advice correct ? She's new to selling recently but I wasn't sure on the rules for returns in this scenario. She has refunded the item now, but I would be interested to know if it was the correct way to go.
Hi
I received these trousers and had them shortened so I could wear them for work tomorrow. I had them made to same length as an identical pair that I have. I came to try on tonight and they were too tight on the waist which I thought was strange and so upon checking the label discovered that they are a size 6 not an 8 as described.
I am wondering if you would be willing to offer a refund please. I have obviously paid extra to have them altered so I am still losing out and can’t re sell as new now .
My apologies for not checking the label first.

Mentor1 month agoIn theory, because the buyer has had the trousers altered (and I find it really odd that they didn't try them on first, I can't think of many people who would go ahead and pay somebody else for an alteration for a garment they hadn't tried on) then they can't return them under eBay's Money Back Guarantee because that requires items to be returned in the same state they were sent out. Technically these are damaged.
But, if it's a small amount I would accept that I made an error when putting the size in the listing and would accept a return if they have a resale value or just issue a refund if they don't and it's not worth paying for the return postage cost.
