Refund cons
I am sure this is not a new problem with EBay users
The money is minimal but the principles need to be established.
Sequence of events
1 ordered and received item with no problem
2 upon opening noticed that the electrical appliance ( pond pump) that the plug/ adaptor was unearthed and not safe to use
3 offered 20% refund as seller pled that returns cost to much
4 offer declined as item unsafe.
5 seller refunds 50% stating falsely that the item was not returned in original condition although not even taken completely out of the box
6 states it is the fault of EBay process
complaint to EBay seems to suggest there is no problem so my question is
can illegal goods be sold with no support ?

Mentor11 months agoPlenty of support but you need to go about it the right way.
You as buyer open a not as described case, seller has to provide return label and on return refund in full.
If you bought from a business seller, then suggest you speak to Citizens Advice as ebay never see what is sold or received so can hardly just take your word on product safety.

eBay does not check any items. The user agreement makes clear that they do not review listings or their content. eBay also warns buyers that they do not guarantee the quality of items sold here, that descriptions will be truthful or accurate or that items for sale will be safe, legal - or even exist.
Would you have bought from a shop that stated this? Yet you accepted the risk that your pond pump from China might be unsafe or illegal. eBay would take no responsibility for this at all.
You can use eBay's money back guarantee, but in future PLEASE think twice before buying safety-critical electrical items from unknown sellers on eBay. We have heard from so many buyers whose items have been unsafe or causes fires.

or to be more precise. a past user of eBay.
As an old man who likes a degree of integrity in the buying and selling transaction . I am surprised at the amount of defence there is if shoddy dealings.
I would not expect eBay to monitor every item sold.
However one might expect heavier sanctions on companies that exploit
safety concerns and refuse to refund fully on a clearly accepted loophole that one could drive a bus through.
Ie goods not returned in original condition.
Such laxed attitude are surprising and as for those that suggest going to the CAB

i just thought I might respond to your advice for the involvement of the CAB.
Not sure where you live or indeed what planet to think that they ( CAB) may contact a company based in China to tell them ( the seller) what naughty people they are.
Although open to abuse the only way would be is for EBay to have more control over sellers.
In my case the item is not safe for outside use.
At least the CAB advice gave me the laugh of the week which as a full time carer for my wife I could do with.
Any more gems like the small claims court or suing the company feel free to contact.

OP10 months agoI suggest it you are in favour you can only be a seller.
Also it is clear from the delivery address what market ( country) you are selling into

You can check where it comes from, this way:
Where you see the .... ' Located in.... ' and a UK location on a listing, that may not necessarily be the location of the seller, it's where the item is located, and it can include where it is sitting in a forwarding company, for the seller to complete a faster dispatch.
To check a seller's location, and ultimately where the item originates from, click on the seller's feedback that will show you the seller's country of registration.

OP10 months agoThis would not have been an issue had the seller refunded the full amount as I thought I was entitled.
Naturally I am not opposed to buying goods manufactured abroad but might expect them to be safe to use and then be deducted 50% for opening the box.
Surely that is not too difficult to understand
