Prevarication, delay and disingenuous behaviour
Summary: greyladdy expressed frustration over a lengthy dispute with a seller regarding an incomplete product, which they returned after sending proof of postage. However, issues arose when the seller claimed the receipt was illegible. Other participants suggested that greyladdy might have missed the chance to claim a refund within eBay's 30-day guarantee period and recommended pursuing a claim through their payment provider. papso22 advised trying to resolve the issue through the funding source.
There have been lots of email exchanges since the end of May (2026)
The product arrived incomplete. I contacted the seller who disputed this. I was asked for photographs, and they were sent. I finally returned the useless item and was asked for proof of postage, which was duly sent. The reply was they couldn't read the receipt. I sent another, but checked with other parties whether the document was clear. They all replied "very legible". I'm fed up with nearly two months of this nonsense. perhaps that's what they are wanting. I have tried the eBay suggestions but I can't find any real help. The purchase history doesn't go back far enough (even though eBay says it will have records year's old) so I can't follow their suggested route. Any advice please.

Mentor2 weeks agoHad you opened an eBay return and selected 'Missing parts or pieces', the seller would then have provided a pre-paid trackable returns label (if they didn't then you could have asked eBay to step in).
As this return appears to have been done outside of eBay more than 30 days ago, it's not possible to involve them now.
Does the tracking number show delivery?

Mentor2 weeks agoProof of postage just indicates that it was sent, you need a tracking number to show delivery. It is possible that your seller hasn't received it back. Your only option here would be to claim from the carrier, but you may be out of time for that now.

This certainly looks like a classic case of delaying tactics to keep you talking until the 30 day time limit for eBay's money back guarantee had expired.
There is a link to this in every listing but sellers know that many buyers don't bother to click on this - let alone read the conditions and time limits.
After 30 says (from the date of delivery) eBay will have no interest, whatever happens. Your best hope is that your payment provider may still be able to help, their time limit to claim will be longer, probably 120 days. However, proof of postage is unlikely to be sufficient; like eBay, they will probably require postal tracking proof that it was returned.

Mentor2 weeks agoToo late now, but as long as you opened a case within 30 days of receipt you would have been guaranteed a refund without all that malarkey. Out of interest why didn't you use the money back guarantee?

OP2 weeks agoThanks - I thought I did use that guarantee - they said if I sent it back they would refund me
