No help from Ebay for sellers
I made a mistake the other day and refunded a buyer before waiting for it to be returned, a silly mistake. But what heppens when the buyer does not return the item because Ebay close the case. ABSOLUTELY NO EFFORT BY EBAY TO HELP. In reality this is a case of theft. You wouldn't go into a shop ask for a refund and walk out with the item you got a refund for. This is totally wrong, its morally wrong. As sellers we always try to keep buyers happy but it seems there is no point if we are going to get ripped off and Ebay just wipes its hands and says there is nothing we can do. So if you are a seller beware and learn from my mistake.

The sad fact is that there are buyers on eBay who will exploit any mistake by a seller to get their item for nothing. Still worse, eBay gives sellers no support even when they are utterly blameless - for example when a buyer opens an "item not received" case for an item which is just one day overdue, but then keeps both the refund and the item when it arrives. Even when the seller can provide tracking proof of delivery.
eBay would (correctly) say that they have no power under the user agreement to require the buyer to return either the refund or the item. But we can only presume that this because eBay has chosen not to revise the user agreement to give itself this power.
In my 20 plus years on these boards there continue to be times when it's been hard not to feel that eBay prefers to turn a blind eye to even proven dishonesty by buyers, rather than tackle it.

Mentor5 months agoYou are a private seller, so I am presuming you used simple delivery as your method of postage? If its a simple delivery item never refund if a INR or Item damaged has been opened against you. The postage contract is with ebay and the carrier not you.
In short you refunded too early, so the system and buyer now think in theory that you didn't want the item back (hence you made the refund)
Your only recourse is as per the excellent advice of @*vyolla*

Mentor5 months agoIn reality it isn't, nobody stole an item from you, you simply made a mistake a refunded them.
Have you tried contacting your buyer and organising the return of the item outside of eBay? You can buy a Royal mail label online and email it to them.

Mentor5 months agoOnce you refunded your buyer would have received a message from ebay to say they have been refunded without them needing to return the item because the seller does not want it back.
Ebay cases are completely automated and there is no room for mistakes. You will have to pursue this now outside ebay.
You can ask your buyer to repay the money through Paypal or even bank transfer, but whatever you do it will be between you and your buyer.
