My buyer changed their minds. I looked at eBay info for sellers and was misled
Summary: roseumry shared their frustration over losing fees after a buyer canceled an eBay transaction due to distance constraints, despite the item being listed as 'collect only'. They voluntarily gave a full refund, fearing negative feedback, and encountered an unhelpful AI chat while seeking a fees refund, which was denied. roseumry expressed skepticism about continuing with eBay and asked for advice on challenging fee decisions or contacting a real person for help. red_magpie explained that fees for optional listing features are non-refundable.
Hi, I've lost fees as my buyer cancelled after they had been taken by eBay. The listing clearly said the item was collect only. They paid. I messaged re collection. They replied. Saying 'sorry I have to cancel, too far'.
I looked at advice for sellers on the website and it appeared to me that in certain circumstances, eBay would refund my fees. I couldn't get more detail as to what that meant but assumed as it was definitely the buyers fault I would be protected. I authorised full refund as I thought if I withhold fees I'd get a negative review. I then go to find out how to contact eBay and end up with an AI chat.
I'm told I voluntarily refunded the fees so will not be getting any refund.
AI told me I wasn't the only seller frustrated by this when buyers cancel. Very helpful. I asked what they were going to do about it as there is little protection for sellers in these circumstances and hoped a real person would read this exchange. AI didn't like that LOL. We are only talking about £4.80, but it's the principle of the thing. I will now need to relist, if I'm going to continue with eBay. Perhaps not! . I had paid a mid percentage for enhanced positioning on the listings which I won't want to do again.
Has anyone successfully challenged this decision? I'd love to know. Or Is it ever possible to speak to a person?
best wishes to all,
roseumry
OP3 weeks agoThanks that’s helpful. Yes, I did. The options have got so much more complicated than when I began 20 years ago, I easily make a mistake. Are there not still final fees depending on the price paid? It was fun debating with AI on the morality of sellers losing out! Thank you again for taking the time to comment.

Mentor3 weeks agoPrivate sellers don't pay fees for selling, so what fees are you referring to? f you used any optional listing features like a reserve price or special promotion a fee will be charged for these. Fees for optional features are never returnable whether the item sells or not.
