Making sure I get paid for a valuable item

Hi everyone, appologies if this is a very obvious question but I couldn't seem to find a specific answer anywhere.
So I will be selling a large valuable item (about 3.5k) shortly and there is a good chance I will need to do so via a courier service. I realise that before I can access the money I need the buyer to give me a code to confirm they have received the goods and are happy with them as I have done when buying things in the past.
Apparently you do have to be very careful that someone doesnt just take your goods and not give you this code on the other end though which is why doing things in person is ideal.
My question is, how do i cover myself and make sure im not scammed when sending large valuable items if im not doing the exchange in person?

Mentor1 month agoWhen you say large valuable item, how large by dimensions and weight? HAve you got a suitable courier in mind with the appropriate insurance to carry this item for you?
IF you are sending by courier you don't need a code, the only ttime his is required is for collection in person.

OP1 month agoAhh right, ok I see.
Yeah its a large carpet cleaning machine of about a square metre and about 40kg plus hoses etc but I think I should be able to arrange that for about £50-70 but it would be a specialised delivery yes.

Mentor1 month agoI would strongly suggest getting that sorted first so when you list the item your pricing for postage is correct. Buyers will not be interested in postage between £50-70....

Mentor1 month agoYes, the collection code is only for when buyers collect from the seller's house. For something that size and weight you'd have to opt out eBay's Simple Delivery postage and then you can use the courier service of your choice. After putting the weight into the listing form you should get the "Oversized" option. If you select it then click on Add Primary Service and enter postage cost. It has to be done on a laptop or desktop rather than the app.

Mentor1 month agoSo you're listing as collection by buyer but will accept them sending a courier? You might consider listing to send with a courier yourself, then you will have more control.
Otherwise you must get the code before you release the item. No code and you don't give the item to the courier.

OP1 month agoSorry I've been buying off Ebay for years but never actually sold before 😅 so just list specifically as sending via courier and make sure I have the code before sending?

Mentor1 month agoIf you list as you sending by courier, for which the buyer pays you direct, there will be no code involved.
