Looking for advice on eBay dispute – buyer collected item but funds are being held
Summary: sujathaalexander-uk is seeking advice on an eBay dispute, where a buyer collected an item but the funds are currently being held. tressygirl responded, but no content is available for further insight. The subject centers around finding a resolution for this situation.
I’m really hoping for some advice as I’m quite stressed about this situation.
I sold an item on eBay and the buyer collected it in person. The circumstances were a bit unusual, but at the time it felt genuine.
The buyer was an elderly man who said he didn’t have a phone. He arranged to meet me in a car park he knew how to get to, and when he arrived, he genuinely appeared to have very limited tech skills. He only had pieces of paper with him, and the only detail he had was the order number scribbled down.
He did not have the 6‑digit collection code with him, but given the situation and that he seemed genuine, I went ahead with the handover
At the point of collection:
- He signed a printed receipt confirming he received the item
- Later, he also sent me a message through eBay confirming he collected the item
However, he is now saying he cannot locate the email with the collection code, and as a result, eBay has not released my funds.
So I’m currently in a situation where:
- The buyer has the item
- I have a signed receipt and message confirmation
- But I still haven’t been paid
I’ve asked the buyer to contact eBay, and I’ve also raised this with eBay myself, asking them to review the messages and release the payment.
I genuinely believed I was helping someone who wasn’t comfortable with technology, but now I’m worried I’ve put myself in a difficult position.
Has anyone experienced something similar?
- Will eBay accept message confirmation + signed receipt as proof?
- Is there anything else I should do to strengthen my case?
- Is this something eBay usually resolves in the seller’s favour?
I’ve always had a good record as a seller, so this is really unsettling.
Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated 🙏

Mentor4 months agoThe rules are clear for collection items, the seller should not release the item before a valid 6 digit collection code is delivered, scanned and proved to show collection.
No other piece of signed paper, video evidence etc. will not be accepted as showing collection.
With no proof, your payout may be held for a minimum of 14 days.
