Item lost by Royal Mail
Summary: basham8381 sold an item and used Royal Mail for delivery, but the tracking has not been updated since it reached "London Central MC." They are concerned about the buyer potentially requesting a refund, leaving them financially responsible for Royal Mail's error. tobiasd4 suggested that the buyer might already have the item despite the lack of tracking updates and advised not to contact the buyer. If contacted by the buyer, it was recommended to have them open an item not received case so eBay could handle the refund. basham8381 expressed concern about potentially being charged by eBay for the refund.
I sold an item. The buyer paid for postage through Royal Mail. I delivered it to a drop point on 13 August. The tracking shows that RM picked it up on 15 August and that it was at "London Central MC". No updates since. The RM website is totally useless. The eBay website only says that the buyer is entitled to a refund. This would leave me out of pocket for the failure of RM. The buyer has not requested (yet) a refund however it does not feel very responsible to leave things as they are. Any thoughts on how to deal with this?

Mentor1 month agoQuite possible buyer has item, but RM not updated tracking.
Do not chase buyer.
If buyer contacts you, ask them to open item not received case, as it was SD, ebay will refund buyer & you keep your money.

OP1 month agoThank you. My concern would be that eBay would refund the buyer and then look to recover the money from me. Or is eBay liable in this case?

Mentor1 month agoIf you sent it using Simple delivery then ebay is responsible for refunding the buyer if an item is not delivered. You keep the sale proceeds.
It's a good idea to read up on how Ebay's systems work when you use them!
