Item from Poland to UK (HM Revenue charges)
Purchased an item to the value of £400. Tow bar for a vehicle.
Seller is based in Poland and did not see this at the time of purchase. Presumed UK.
Item was due on the 16-29th and still not here.
Last update on the tracking was on the 23rd Dec advising the item had been released from customs.
A colleague suggested their will be a HM Revenue charge for this as over £135 and bought from outwith the UK.
If this is the case there was no mention of this at the checkout when making payment and I’m really unhappy about this as the VAT would come in at £100 odd.
Can someone please advise if this is accurate.
Many thanks.

Mentor6 months agoSince Brexit, anything you import into the UK has import taxes on it, even a £1 item.
Import VAT at 20% is added, and for items with a declared value of over £135 Customs Duty is applicable.
eBay doesn't warn you about this at checkout because buyers are supposed to be aware of their own import regulations, which are set by our very own HMRC and nothing to do with eBay or eBay sellers.
What was the item location showing on the listing? We can check for you if you can provide a link to the listing or the listing number.

Mentor6 months agoYou haven't told us the listing number, or where it stated that the item was located.
If the lisitng stated that it was located in Poland and you just didn't notice this you can only write it down to experience.
If the item hasn't arrved by the latest estimated delivery date you can open a case under eBay's money back guarantee (although over the hoilday period it's fair to allow a bit more time for it to arrive. You would have to claim any import duties back from HMRC (but not the courier's handling charge).
If the listing stated that the item was located in the UK, but it was actually sent from Poland, this would be location misrepresentation and you would need to speak to eBay about it.

Mentor6 months agoFirst of all, you are importing, and that means that up to £135 in value VAT would be added and collected by ebay.
Over £135 Import Duty is payable and would be collected by whoever is delivering. Royal Mail for example advise you of amount payable before they will deliver.
If item was in Poland there should be some mention on the listing, but as you did not see where it was located, and presumably did not look at postage to the UK then you would also not see the warning.
Once past the expected delivery date you can open a it a Not Received Case.
Just as a warning, failure to pay Customs Duty when requested invalidates the Money Back Guarantee.
