import tax after return and refund
Summary: mmk1313 purchased motorcycle pannier bags from Germany and returned them due to poor quality and a broken strap, receiving a refund from the seller. However, the seller refused to refund the £55.98 import tax, stating it was unrelated to them. mmk1313 believes the seller is responsible and seeks advice. *vyolla* explains that import taxes are not managed by the seller but by eBay, and suggests contacting customs for a refund on the tax if the item was returned.
I purchased an item, motorcycle pannier bags from Germany. They were not fit for purpose and very low quality and strap broken and so I returned. The seller fully refunded the purchase price so in my eyes accepted they were faulty. However I also paid £55.98 import tax and I have asked the seller to also refund this as I have returned a faulty item, have no pannier bags and am out of pocket by this amount. The seller has refused this request and said it has nothing to do with them. I Disagree as they supplied an item not fit for purpose and so I think this is their fault.
Please advise if I have a case. thank you

Mentor1 month agoThe seller is correct, import taxes are nothing to do with them, they don't collect them or receive anything from them, eBay does.
If you paid tax on your purchase through eBay and you get a refund for your order, you'll also get a refund for the proportionate amount of tax. For example, if you receive a full refund, you'll get the entire tax back. If you receive a 50% partial refund, you'll get 50% of the tax back. Any refunds processed outside eBay's systems are not eligible for a tax refund.
If you paid import taxes or duty as part of clearing your parcel through customs but you then returned the item, please contact the customs authority regarding a refund of the charges.
