I think someone tried to scam me
I recieved an ebay message this morning and well... I'll let the screenshots do the talking.
I've hidden the user's username and avatar just in case/policy reasons/etc.
I have sold another of this same item, but that one was delivered and even recieved good feedback for it. I even checked to see if this particular version of this bear was in my possession (can't remember every item I've sold after all) incase some ebay shenanigans had occured. As expected, I still have the exact bear.
The way they messaged me just doesn't feel right, feels kinda vague, and then to just go "forget it" when I start questioning it more, feels like they tried to get a free item out of me.
The "no not a scam" reply they sent was their last, as they never replied to my question on how did they pay for an unsold item and that no returns have occured with me, except once. I then sent another question not seen in the screenshots asking if they would like to take this up with ebay. Still no response, and we where both around at the same time. Maybe they stepped away to do something else, could be, but feels weirdly convenient.
The account has been around since 2020, but only has 1 positive feedback. Their avatar was also very standard, not a unique picture, like the default. Not saying you need to change it at all, and if they don't use ebay much, 1 positive feedback in 5-6 years isn't a red light as such, but just feels like a mostly unused account. Or an account merely to scam.
Should I report them? I don't want people falling for stuff like this, though I know most people would know better, but still, people might be taken advantage of.

This does seem like a strange one alright. I have seen a similar situation with another user before and what may have happened here is they may have bought a similar item from another seller and got you mixed up with them. The best thing to do would be to advise them to open up an item not received case. That way it will open up on the correct sellers account and start the communication between them and not you.

Mentor6 months agoNot a high scam item, a £12 bear, but clearly that person has mixed you up with another transaction.
As advised, tell them to open an eBay item not received claim if they haven't received an item they've paid for.

OP6 months agoNot sure how they can open a claim, since I still have that exact bear they claim they "bought", and it wasn't a sold item among all my others orders. One other bear like this one (I had multiple of the same bear sometimes) I did sell, as mentioned, but it was the only one. Makes no sense. I think they either mixed me up with someone else (somehow), or it's an attempt to get a free item. Not an expensive item, sure, but still.

Mentor6 months agoIf they bought an item from a different seller they can open a claim, it's just a way of washing your hands of them and not engaging further.

Mentor6 months agoVery poor explanation from this “buyer”, and if a scam poor way of going about it.
Only possible explanation even if story is true, is that buyer bought as a guest. If this is the case then you would not see their real ID, but would have a sale that matched the details given.
Correct way in these circumstances, the buyer should contact you through the confirmation email received from ebay.
Not having ever bought as a guest or as far as I am aware sold to a “guest” I do not know how email from ebay is worded, or how transaction works at sellers end.
For information, members cannot partially hide feedback. It is either all visible or all hidden. Active sellers cannot hide fb.

OP6 months agoI wasn't aware people could buy as a guest - I thought you always needed an account.

I would send one final message suggesting they open an item not received case through Ebay.
Then block them and ignore them.

OP6 months agoActually the user has more positive feedback, but only 1 is public it seems. Not that I think this matters much.
