How do i avoid double postage if i need to upgrade the

Postage to 1st class and only way to get the address is to save the auto label.

Question

I was late posting an item so needed to upgrade to 1st class but ending up paying the postage twice as only way I could see the address was to save the ebay produced label. What did I do wrong?

You did nothing wrong, but a refund for the unused Simple Delivery is made this way:

If you selected 'Buyer pays’ when you created the listing, your buyer will automatically be refunded for any Simple Delivery label that isn’t used after 30 days

If you selected ‘Seller pays’ and offered free postage on your listing, you'll need to fill out the Request a refund for Simple Delivery form for the label that wasn’t used. Make sure to send your request within 14 days of your item selling.

Obviously if you hadn't been late that wouldn't have happened. To avoid buying your own postage you would have had to cancel the transaction and relist for the buyer to buy again. But you or buyer should not be charged for a label that is not scanned at the post office.
