Help on VAT for a UK sale via the GSP Returned
I sold an item from the UK to Italy via the GSP.
The buyer has returned it and I have received a bill for import VAT to release it.
How can I claim this VAT back or refuse to pay this VAT when the original sale was via GSP not me (so I didn't have anything to do with the outbound VAT.)
Or do I just have to suck it up? (its about £200).

Mentor10 months agoOuch, that's a high bill.
Your buyer should've marked the customs label as a return (there is a box to tick for that) so there's nothing to pay, but now that they haven't you'll need to pay it and then reclaim it from HMRC (there's a form on their website). You won't be able to claim back the admin fee part of it though.
Give HMRC a call first though on Monday and see if they have a workaround.

OP10 months agoThanks though looking at the form they filled in there isnt actually an option to say its a return - there are just two boxes - "goods" and "documents".

Mentor10 months agoSounds like an odd customs label if that's all the info that's required. They could simply have written 'return' somewhere.

OP10 months agoThanks I'll suggest that (there is a longer story here where the item was actually returned back to them before I was ever sent an invoice) so they have another chance to return the item to me.
It is actually a very long story.
For example UPS claim to have tried to deliver it to me four times but I have a ring doorbell and there was zero movement and zero doorbell rings!
The UPS customs invoice I got today - 22 November, despite it being dated by them 29 October. Meanwhile UPS had already started a return to sender on 18th November (none of which I had visibility of until today as the letter was the very first contact from UPS - and the Italian Post tracking number was no help at all.)
Oh and ebay opened and closed a case in my favour that neither I or the buyer wanted. Of course I will honour a refund to the buyer - but he is worried he has no way of getting back the postage and fees paid to ebay GSP for the outbound journey.
