Help needed for return and refund
Summary: purplebib10 expressed frustration about a buyer on eBay claiming that the main stone from a Victorian ring they sold had fallen out, leading eBay to approve a return and refund. red_magpie advised that under eBay’s money-back guarantee, purplebib10 needs to accept the claim and possibly pay for a return label to get the ring back, but warned that eBay usually sides with buyers. papso22 questioned why the buyer wouldn't be covered if the stone fell out, while john1297576 suggested checking if the stone could be retrieved from the drain and noted that appeals rarely succeed.
Hi,
I sold a victorian ring , about a week ago, and the buyer claims that the garnet/ruby/spinel fell out when she washed her hands and went down the drain.
She requested a return and refund to eBay and they have agreed to it!
I have no idea how it could possibly have 'fallen out' as there was nothing loose when I tried it on, measured it, photographed it, weighed it, etc. She has shown a photo with main stone missing and I am supposed to send a refund for a ring that I will no longer be able sell!
I have no idea how to deal with this. I have been a member of eBay for 22 years and never had a problem.

I take it that by "return and refund" you mean that she has opened a case under eBay's money back guarantee?
If so, I'm afraid you have no alternative but to accept the claim and agree to the refund.
You will also have to send the buyer a prepaid return label if you want the ring back, which you can pay for through eBay. If you don't do this, eBay will enforce the refund and not require the ring to be returned.
When you get the ring back and the buyer has been refunded you can in theory appeal eBay's decision. In practice, if it's the buyer's word against the seller's, eBay is sure to accept the buyer's. This is the reality for sellers on eBay today.

OP3 weeks agoThank you. Somehow I didn't think eBay would work in my favour, but I can but hope.
I just cannot understand how they can accept a return and refund for a ring that , now, has the main gem missing! I will most definitely be appealing their decision. x

Mentor3 weeks agoIf the gem did fall out why shouldn't the buyer be covered by the money back guarantee?

Mentor3 weeks ago · EditedWhile returns should be in same condition as received, I doubt that an appeal will achieve anything.
Most drains have a U bend in the pipe, and items dropped can be recovered by if necessary a plumber. Have you asked about this?
