Fraudulent buyers effecting seller status
Summary: andbreth_33 shared their experience of facing account restrictions and payment holds on eBay after two new accounts falsely reported their high-value gold items as counterfeit. Despite providing evidence and eBay closing the buyers' accounts, the seller's account was still temporarily restricted, impacting their access to funds. They are seeking advice from other sellers who have encountered similar issues, particularly when dealing with high-value items, and are concerned about the lack of a clear timeframe for their account to return to normal.
Has anybody else experienced anything like this as a seller?
I always just get generic replies and whatever I say they acknowledge I’d done nothing wrong and still leave restrictions in place - see below :(
The transactions
I’ve been selling on eBay for over 3 years and have 100+ positive feedback.
Recently, two completely new accounts purchased high-value gold items from me. Both buyers subsequently reported to eBay that the items were not genuine gold.
The items had been purchased directly from The Royal Mint, and I had full evidence of purchase and delivery.
eBay’s investigation
After several weeks of going back and forth with eBay, they ultimately closed both buyers’ accounts. I didn’t lose any money in the end, and eBay accepted the evidence I provided.
However, the claims that I was selling counterfeit or fake gold apparently triggered restrictions on my account.
The resulting restrictions
As a result, I temporarily lost my normal seller privileges, had my funds frozen, and am now having to wait around 30 days for funds to be released, even after items have been delivered.
Previously, my funds were generally available within 24 hours.
It’s extremely frustrating to feel that I’ve been penalised because two new accounts made claims against me that eBay ultimately considered suspicious enough to close their accounts.
eBay have told me that my account should return to its previous status in the future, but they haven’t provided a specific timeframe.
Advice sought
Has anyone else experienced this?
I’d especially like to hear from sellers dealing with high-value items, where a false “not genuine” claim can have a major impact on an account.
How long did it take for your account restrictions and payment holds to return to normal?
