FAULTY ITEM RETURNED BUT REPLACED WITH A DIFFERENT PRODUCT
Summary: kpri7485 shared their experience with a problematic purchase of a refurbished computer, facing issues with delays, missing parts, receiving a different product, and unresponsive seller communication. The seller requested that kpri7485 pay for return postage despite their mistakes. *vyolla* and tommystrezures advised that since eBay and payment provider protections have expired, the issue is now solely between the buyer and the seller, suggesting seeking advice from consumer groups for legal options.
Purchased a refurbished computer in Oct 25. I needed help from my son to instal because of mobility problems. Unfortunately it took a while to arrive by which time my son had gone back to Uni in Scotland & was unavailable. At Xmas we opened the package & he set it up. Not only did it not work but there were parts missing. Contacted the seller who agreed to exchange it. By the time the replacement arrived my son had returned to Scotland , so again the package waited until his return in May. When we opened it not only did the computer not work but it was in a worse condition as there was a loose screw rolling around in the box, the drive cover was missing & it was missing a 'foot'. I wrote again & was asked to send photos, but as I was doing so realised that what I'd been supplied with was not even the same brand as what I'd bought. On informing the seller I was totally ignored for over a month before a chasing email finally got a response. I was told that if I paid the postage to return it (ie pay for a 2nd time!) they'd exchange it. I wrote saying this was unreasonable as this was totally their mistake - a week later I am still awaiting a reply.
I have lost faith in this supplier. He says I've had use of it for 9 mths (at the time it was 7 mths including the time it spent in transit) even though it has never worked, It is a different product to what I purchased & he does not reply within the period specified by EBay.
Suggestions please.

MentorJul 13, 2026 at 12:37 PMThere isn’t much you can do ebay won’t be interested as it’s outside their 30 day mbg, and you are well outside the 120 days financial institutions allow. This is between you and the seller.
To be honest it’s always a buyers responsibility to ensure goods are working and or as described within the 30 days of receipt to ensure protection from eBay

MentorJul 13, 2026 at 12:36 PMAs you're probably aware, you're way out of time to get eBay to get involved here, or your payment provider, so this really is between you and your seller. If your seller is a UK registered business seller you may want to take some free advice from one of the online consumer groups or Citizens Advice regarding pursuing this via a legal claim.
