eBay refunded buyer before my refund deadline – will I get a defect and can I appeal it?
Summary: uk2globe is seeking advice about a return case where a buyer returned an item, but it was mistakenly delivered to an unoccupied address. Despite efforts to resolve the issue with Royal Mail and eBay, eBay refunded the buyer before the given deadline, leaving uk2globe without the item and the payment. They are concerned about receiving a defect for the case closure and wondering if they have grounds to appeal.
Hi everyone,
Looking for some advice about a return case.
A buyer returned an item and Royal Mail tracking showed it as delivered on 11 September Friday afternoon. However, the tracking says it was delivered to Flat 2, while I live at Flat 3. Flat 2 has been unoccupied for around 3 years and I still haven't received the parcel.
I checked everywhere, asked in our residents group, contacted Royal Mail and messaged the buyer. Royal Mail told me that because it was a misdelivery, the sender needs to raise the issue with them.
eBay showed that I had until 15 September to refund the buyer. While I was dealing with the missing return and contacting eBay Customer Service asking what I should do, eBay stepped in on 14 September Sunday early morning and refunded the buyer.
So basically I have lost the item and the money, even though I was still within the refund deadline and actively trying to resolve the issue with eBay.
I haven't received a defect yet, but I assume I will get a case closed without seller resolution defect.
Has anyone had something similar? If I do get the defect, do you think I have a good case to get it removed considering eBay stepped in before the 15 September deadline they gave me?

MentorSep 14, 2026 at 6:12 PMYou have 3 days from proof of delivery back to you to refund.
As you didn't do this in time, ebay forced it.
Ebay only require POD, they don't check if it is correct address.
