eBay forcing me to pay for a parcel I didn't loose

Recently sold an item, posted it (with receipts, photos of the box and everything). The buyer got a completely different box. They contacted eBay, who told them to send it back to me and that they'd get a refund. So, they sent it back to me and obviously I got the wrong parcel. So now I am at a huge loss of £210 which I have to pay back to the buyer for a parcel I didn't loose. I've had no response from eBay or royal mail and I made it a case with the police. Where can I prove to them it wasn't my fault or get them to cover the cost as I'm just not paying for something which I did not cause.

The buyer is entitled to a refund under eBay's money back guarantee if they received the wrong parcel. The question is whose whose responsibility this was?
As you're a private seller I presume this item was sent using eBay's simple delivery?
If so, the position is rather complicated. If you dispatched the wrong item, you would be responsible for refunding the buyer. However, if the litem was lost or damaged in delivery, eBay would be responsible for the refund. It seems to me that the same should apply if the parcel was switched in error to deliver the wrong item - which I think is what the buyer is saying?
If you posted and paid for the delivery yourself, i.e. not through simple delivery, then the responsibility will rest with you to refund the buyer, regardless of whose fault it was. It would be for you to claim whatever compensation is available from Royal Mail according to the servce you used. Isn't there some postmark or paperwork in the returned parcel, or some difference in size or weight to prove that it wasn't the one you sent to the buyer?

OP2 months agoI sent the correct item with eBay simple delivery, I have all the proof for so (reciept and photos of label on box) and the buyer got the wrong parcel, neither of which we were expecting. I did not post anything like what he got, neither did he buy anything like what he got, so we came to a conclusion that it must have been a problem on Royal Mail's side. eBay had no interest in my messages and forced me to refund the buyer when it was not my fault that the wrong parcel got delivered.
There's a large difference in size, the parcel I posted was overside and the one he received was medium. Additionally the box he received (which I now have as eBay believes it's the original item) has a shipping label from around the same timestamp which when I look up is stuck at my local depot, and never got delivered to the person who was meant to recieve it.
