ebay are charging VAT on already VAT inclusive UK sales
Summary: louise4243 is a 'Sole Trader' in the UK who has encountered an issue with eBay, as the platform is incorrectly adding 20% VAT on their already VAT-inclusive prices. Despite making numerous calls to eBay, they have not resolved the issue, which stems from eBay's belief that the seller has bases abroad. This misunderstanding appears related to the seller using a VPN while traveling. They are seeking advice or similar experiences from others, as the situation is negatively impacting their sales.
I am a UK 'Sole Trader' seller based in the UK with a UK address, bank account and VAT number selling withing the UK or using ebay GPS. over the past week, ebay in their wisdom have decided to add 20% VAT on top of my already inclusive VAT price. Ebay are collecting the VAT for themselves (despite charging UK VAT as well) and sunk my sales as I'm now 20% dearer. Following 13 calls getting nowhere fast, my understanding is they think I have bases aboard and why VAT needs to be added. Delving deeper, they gave me the country codes I'm supposed to be based and they were all the places I'd been on holiday and logged into my account as well as a VPN active phone (used occasionally). Whilst I understand the issues now, I'm getting no where with ebay to resolve. Any ideas or similar experiences? I would be grateful as its killing my business.

Mentor1 month agoAre you sure ebay are collecting VAT “for themselves”.
If you have sales overseas, ebay collects VAT for the buyers Tax Authority, which is added on to the buyers invoice.
