I have listed an item for sale on eBay, and they have set up a direct debit with my bank. Why is this necessary if I’m not purchasing anything?

You wouldn't have to if you were only purchasing things.
Sellers have responsibilities. You need to set up a payment authority for eBay to claim any fees payable, and to meet the cost of any refunds and returns for which you may be responsible.

Mentor5 months agoWhen you list items for sale on eBay you need to register for eBay's Managed Payments.
These means you provide bank details so that you payouts can be sent there for you to withdraw. You also need to set up a back up method in case refunds need to be made and there is no money in the Available section of your Payment Summary and this is usually your bank account.
