Customer Services Not Fit For Purpose
Summary: eskisteph58 shared a frustrating experience with eBay's customer service regarding an order the seller could not fulfill due to item damage. Despite repeated attempts to clarify the cancellation process, eBay was unresponsive and claimed incorrect contact information, even after contacting them earlier. papso22 explained that sellers often try to manipulate cancellation requests to avoid defects by making buyers initiate cancellations, which may explain the seller's actions.
I have had a bizarre incident this evening I asked for Ebay to contact me about an item I have purchased the seller states they cannot send it has they have discovered it damaged they said I have to cancel the order.
I sell items too and if I cannot fulfil an order I have to cancel.
Ebay did ring me back when I asked if the seller has to cancel the order they said no has the buyer I had to when I queried this they hung up on me, I requested 3 more times for them to ring me back and for all the 3 times no one did but I received an email stating I must have given them the wrong number has they could not contact me but they had already contacted me on the number this evening.
I could not even save the conversation I was not given the option so I have screen saved all the conversation. I have never known such a farce I have been with Ebay over 18 years they simply seem to get worse.
I have messaged the seller stating if they can no longer supply the item they should cancel the order and refund me.

Buyers can't actually cancel, they can only ask to, it's sellers that have to initiate the cancellation process if asked, or off their own bat, for example if out of stock or damaged. If they do the latter they get a defect.
What some sellers do to avoid a defect is to try and get the buyer to say they want to cancel so the seller can use the 'buyer requested' option. This seems to be what your seller was doing.
