Charged VAT even though we are both in the UK?
Summary: primetimebg is questioning why they were charged VAT, even though the transaction was between two parties located in the UK. They seem confused about the VAT regulations or the reason behind the charge. fargvs and papso22 replied, but the content of their responses is not available. The discussion remains unresolved with primetimebg seeking clarification.
Won an auction on eBay UK, both the seller and I are located in the UK, but when I try to pay I get hit a VAT charge. These are not the pennies they charge on shipping and buyer protection. In my last 100 orders these has never happened. I contacted Support, but the agent I got had zero idea what she was talking about.
I found some previous posts of a VAT glitch that sometimes occurs. Has anyone found a solution to it? Or are my only options to just pay the bogus VAT or cancel the deal?

Mentor5 months agoThere have been recent examples of ebay AI thinking a listing is a digital item and adding VAT to those, and also having a glitch relating to the book category.
Sometimes the listing shows the price without VAT, and it's added at checkout, sometimes ebay adds it to the listing price.
The seller should be the one to query it as we need to see the listings.

Mentor5 months agoEven if item is in the UK , if either the Buyer and/or Seller is using/or has initially had an account that was registered outside the UK site , then an additional 20% Import VAT and any additional delivery fee is charged ---

OP5 months agoThis is what Support told me, but I tried a couple of Buy Now items and got charged no VAT. So it is not from my side.
I also tried buying another item from the seller’s store - same thing, no VAT.
