Charge buyer for cost of cancelled order?
Summary: mljdlic shared an experience where they had to cancel a sale on eBay after the buyer requested it before dispatch. Although the seller was initially reluctant, eBay rules indicated they should agree to the cancellation and provide a full refund. This cancellation resulted in a UPS charge of £7.50, which the seller felt should be passed on to the buyer, but eBay rules prohibit charging buyers for cancellation costs. papso22 confirmed the seller cannot charge the buyer, while tressygirl suggested that while the situation is frustrating, it is best practice to refund the buyer and possibly recoup costs by adjusting the item’s relisting price.
I sold a tent, the buyer paid and I paid for postage, which was £50 due to the size. Then the buyer asked to cancel before the item had been dispatched. I was reluctant to cancel but eBay rules suggested that I should agree to it and give a full refund. This is what I did.
However UPS are going to charge me £7.50 for cancelling the delivery. I know it's not much but I feel I should be able to charge the buyer for this. eBay rules state that sellers can't charge buyers for any costs associated with cancelling. Is this everyone's understanding?

Mentor1 month agoIt's annoying when a buyer asks to cancel there's no denying that, and as a seller you can refuse a cancellation.
Most would agree the best way forward in most cases , is to agree and refund, if the item is sent, there is always the possibility a case for item not as described could be opened, and the item returned damaged.
As correctly advised, you cannot charge that delivery cost now to the buyer, but if you are relisting the item, you could add that cost to the starting price of the item.
