Buying a butter knife

Question

I tried to bid on a butter knife, but ebay wouldn't let me unless I provided a credit card to prove I am over 18, presumably because AI latches onto the k word, and doesn't realise that buttering bread seldom results in injury!

I don't have a credit card, but I am an ebay member of many years standing, and you have to be 18 to open an account, so why isn't this enough?

Proof is needed at payment level because someone underage could potentially be using your account.

Yep , a butter knife holds little or no danger as does a cake knife, but AI seeing the word knife and that's enough for the necessity for age verification .

Overkill for safety reasons? Yes, but those are their rules.

Only way for you aside from buying elsewhere, would be to get a friend or family member to buy the item for you who has a credit card on their eBay account.
