Buyer has to pay return postage on a mis-described item?
Summary: golden-horse1 ordered a car boot liner from an online marketplace, but it did not fit their car despite matching the description. They opened a return request but found out they would need to cover the return shipping costs, leading to dissatisfaction. *vyolla* and papso22 advised that selecting 'Doesn't fit' is considered a change of mind return, wherein the buyer pays postage; they suggested choosing 'Doesn't match description or photos' instead. papso22 also mentioned the possibility of making a claim through the payment source. golden-horse1 realized that the seller was a business registered as private, which could have been a warning sign.
Over a week ago I was looking for a car boot liner for my car. Found one on eBay where the item description matched both the model and year of my car, and so I ordered it.
It arrived today and...doesn't fit. It's not the right shape. So I took some pictures and opened a return ("Doesn't fit"). Seller, who is a business accepts the return but eBay now wants me to send it back at my cost. And being a heavy duty mat it isn't either small or light.
I've just been on the phone to eBay support (India) and they're essentially told me too bad for you and that if I want to return it I will have to take the ~33% loss. As you can imagine that does not make me happy.
So I'm just wondering if there are any other options?

OP1 month agoI think that might be the only way to go.
I've also just had a look at his profile; the fact that he's very clearly a business seller and yet registered as private probably should have been a tip off that there might be issues.

Mentor1 month agoDoes not fit counts as a buyer remorse return and the buyer pays the return postage.
Your item was 'not as described' and if you use one of those reasons the seller pays for the return.

Mentor1 month agoIf you selected 'Doesn't fit' as the reason for the return this is viewed as a change of mind return, so the buyer pays postage in this instance.
You should've selected "Doesn't match description or photos'.

OP1 month agoThanks for the quick reply. I can see from some other posts that other people have been caught out by this; I suspect most people would regard "doesn't fit" as the same was as 'not as described'.
