Bought two Elemis face oils that are fakes
Summary: sailingdooodad expressed concerns that two Elemis face oils they purchased might be counterfeit due to batch codes and differences in bottle details. They detailed interactions with the seller, who gave contradictory explanations for these discrepancies. sailingdooodad has opened a "not as described" case with eBay and is seeking advice. *vyolla* recommended proceeding with the eBay return process and advised against closing the return prematurely. They also suggested reporting to Trading Standards if the seller is UK registered and cautioned against buying from private or international sellers.
I recently bought two Elemis face oils that I believe are fake. They have the exact same batch code, which they shouldn't do as they are two different products.
The actual bottles have the batch code printed on and not lasered like genuine Elemis do and smell very different from a real product.
I contacted the seller and they first started to say that it was because they were made at the same time in the factory. When I pointed out that they had two different fonts, they then said it was because they were made in two different factories but at the exact same moment and it was because they were different Inkjet printers.
They then said I should pay postage and send them back but knowingly posting counterfeit goods is illegal. I've opened up a "not as described" case with eBay, what should I do now?

Mentor1 month ago · EditedProviding these were received within the past 30 days then stick with the eBay return. Your seller should provide a pre-paid returns label within 3 business days, or you can ask eBay to step in after that time period.
Do not, under any circumstances, close that return if the seller asks - you won't be able to re-open it if you do.
If your seller is a UK registered business seller then you should report them to Trading Standards. If they're not, I'd question buying anything that you put on your face from a private or international sellers, Lord knows what could be in there.
Edit to add: The feedback you've left is great, that should warn other potential buyers. That seller is technically a business using a private account, a very big red flag there.
