Bizarre
Summary: dodomarwell1 discussed a situation where a buyer initially gave a positive review for a purchased toy but later claimed an accessory was missing and requested a return. Despite receiving a mismatching box upon return, dodomarwell1 is unsure about issuing a refund due to a looming deadline and probable loss of the item. papso22 suggested reporting the buyer for potential fraud, while *vyolla* advised on the reporting process and how to halt the automated returns process with eBay until a case review is conducted.
I sold a toy and the buyer received it on the 7th and gave me a positive review. She said it’s perfect and she’s very pleased. On the 12th, she messaged me claiming one of the accessories was missing! She already had this item in a different colour so she knew exactly what needed to be in the box. She also claimed that she had a video of her opening the box. Although she could not upload she sent stills. However, It did not show her opening the original box but the box belonging to the item. On the 13th, she opened a return request which for a quiet life I accepted as I couldn’t prove I had sent it. It was strange as it was brand new. Now she has sent me the item with a different box. Which doesn’t match the item. She admits she sent the wrong box. However, I have a deadline in which I need to refund the item by. I doubt I will have the missing item by then please advise.

Mentor3 weeks agoThe usual way forward in these situations is that the seller accepts the return and gets their item back, if it isn’t their item they immediately file a report with Reportfraud (used to be Actionfraud) and get a report number:
https://www.reportfraud.police.uk/
Then click the "Report a problem" link in the eBay case, select "Different item returned" as the reason and provide the Reportfraud reference number and report. This stops the automated returns process that would ultimately force the seller to issue a refund.
Then, someone at eBay reviews the case. As to what happens next depends on a few factors - if the buyer has done this before, if the seller is a long standing eBay member who's had no issues like this before etc.

Mentor3 weeks agoThere is a process to follow that requires you to report the buyer to 'report fraud' and then to ebay but whether it's worth it depends on the value of the item.
