Bid up to max but the only bidder? How does that happen?
Summary: lard_007 won an auction on eBay, but despite being the only bidder, the bid history showed their bid increasing up to their maximum, resulting in confusion. They reported that the item had no reserve and contacted an eBay agent, who was also unable to explain the situation and referred it to a technical department. red_magpie shared their puzzlement, noting that bidding should not have exceeded the starting price without competition. tobiasd4 speculated about the presence of a reserve, despite no indication of one. Hi,
Won an auction item but confused as whilst I was the only bidder and sat at £1 for a number of days, the bid history shows my bid increasing up to my maximum yet only I was bidding on the item?
I increased my max bid after the first time it happened (as bid up to £3 below my max) and then the price increased again to my max bid
Was this accounts bidding that subsequently got banned yet their max stayed valid?

£1 start and what I was high bidder for
27/9 went to £57
29/9 went to £60
I'm very confused as would have thought it should have stayed at £1?

Mentor2 weeks agoOnly reason I can think is if there was a reserve on item, minimum £50.
But I can't see anything to say "Reserve met".

Mentor2 weeks ago · EditedI was expecting to send the usual smart-Alec reply about reading the bidding history, but in this case I am as puzzled as you are why you didn't win the auction at the starting price of £1.00.
You bid twice, on the second occasion increasing your bid. But you're not supposed to be able to bid against yourself so as no-one bid against you I don't see why you didn't win the auction for £1.00. There do not appear to have been any cancelled bids or other forms of bid manipulation.
I'm off to watch The Magnificent Seven remake now, but I shall look forward to reading other responses when the film has ended to see whether I have missed something,.

OP2 weeks agoHad a callback from an ebay agent - couldn't explain it, didn't understand why it wasn't won for £1 - sent it up the line to a technical department - still confused
