Authenticity Guarantee
I am a private seller who sells items I have collected over the years that I have now decided to let go. I recently sold an item of gold jewellery & it went to the authenticator … today I was told it had failed authentication as whilst it was 14k gold there was no UK Hallmark. This is because it had a Turkish hallmark - as shown in the photos on the original listing. The buyer was happy with this.
I was told by an eBay advisor that the law states only gold with a UK hallmark can be sold on eBay.
If such a law exists then surely sellers should be made aware & why are eBay willing to break the law by allowing the sale of non UK Hallmarked gold items under £500?
If it is not the law then the buyer should be allowed to decide if they wish to purchase the item or not.
Are others aware of this ‘law’?
I guess I now have no option but to scrap a very beautiful, perfectly wearable, 14ct gold necklace.

·11 months agoThere is no way that the millions of jewellery items listed every day can be checked by Ebay. It is up to sellers to investigate the rules and what is allowed or expected.
All the rules are here under Ebay's Jewellery policy - this is the relevant part where it states clearly that items listed as gold etc. should indeed have a full UK hallmark:
