Buyer wants me to cancel order, but then says item posted
Summary: geoffcc shared an experience where a seller claimed they couldn't deliver an item to a common location and asked geoffcc to cancel the order. tommystrezures and others responded by explaining sellers can cancel orders without affecting their performance, suggesting the seller may not know the rules or might be avoiding a refund due to financial issues. john1297576 suggested the seller might not have funds to refund. geoffcc sent cancellation instructions to the seller, but they persisted in asking for cancellation from the buyer's side, leading geoffcc to decide to wait for eBay to handle the refund. Despite the issue, geoffcc is hesitant to leave negative feedback, suspecting misunderstanding rather than intentional scamming.
Bought and paid for an item, then the seller sent a message saying that they could not deliver to my location - this is odd as I live in a suburb of a large city and have had over 2000 deliveries from ebay. All the delivery services deliver to my address. They then said I should cancel my order. I suggested as it was they who were cancelling, they should cancel and trigger an automatic refund. They did not want to do this. Then they said the item had been posted, but untracked. I guess there is no way to avoid just waiting for non-delivery (which I strongly believe they are banking on so as to avoid them cancelling) I know I will eventually get a refund, but is there any reason the seller would be so reluctant to cancel an order and prefer the buyer to cancel?

OP3 months agoSo, I register an "item not received" on 1 July and ebay acknowledge, then the seller replies saying the item was delivered on 1 July - it wasn't. Not sure how they think this will work, but with no tracking or proof of delivery, plus the email trail if needed , ebay will refund me and this seller now gets negative feedback for playing silly games.

OP3 months agoI sent them instructions on how to cancel from seller's position. They ignored them and kept saying that I should ask to cancel. I'll just let ebay do a refund. They are only a small trader, but they do have 98% positive rating and will probably learn eventually. I am always reluctant to give negative feedback unless I suspect I am being scammed and I cannot see how that is the case here.

·3 months agoSeller may be aware of rules, but creating problems as he is not in a position to refund. Ebay balance withdrawn and spent, and no money in bank account.

·3 months agoFor one buyers cannot cancel an order, you can request but thats it so to speak.
From the wording in your message re location are you in say somewhere like a BT, AB etc postcode where the likes of Evri charge a premium, and the seller is not prepared to pay the extra couple of quid or ask you as the buyer if its ok to use Royal Mail instead who don't charge extra.

OP3 months ago · EditedNo, not in a premium location at all. That is why I was confused when they said their preferred delivery agent could not deliver to my address. I suspect another motive, just cannot figure out what it is.

·3 months agoWas it an auction item perhaps they didn't get as much money as they thought they deserved?
geoffcc
OP3 months agoNope, not an auction, although, they were selling at a lower price than other sellers, but only by £1. It is their insistence on me cancelling and refusing to cancel themselves that I can't understand. I told them I would be happy for them to cancel.

·3 months agoLooks like they do not know the rules. Buyers cannot cancel and order.
The seller here, if they wish to, can cancel citing ' Buyer Requests to Cancel', this fully refunds you, and their seller performance is not affected. Perhaps send them a message explaining this process.

·3 months agoThats all you can do is tell them that eg to cancel order, be aware for the reason they use.
