App not working - update required
Just tried opening the app on my android phone and get the message "this version is no longer supported. Please update to the latest version". Pressing the "update" goes to Google play but the only options are "Uninstall" or "Open" - no option to update. Pressing "Cancel" closes the app.
I suspect they pushed a new version of the app to deal with the changes introduced overnight but something has gone wrong somewhere.
Anyone else got this issue?

I'm running an onn 11 tablet android ver 14, my app stopped about a week ago, no warning, let's me sign in, can go to the my eBay page, won't display anything
Tried my Kyocera phone, app works just fine..... Any thoughts
Much prefer an 11 inch screen to a 4.3. tried uninstall, reinstall\uninstalled and now can't reinstall, says no longer available for this device, on Android 14?
Whatever, not use the web for it....... Guess they lost a long time user on this one.... Hope your genius AI pays your bills eBay.....
Thanks

·3 months agoI think I may have a solution to this problem.
If you’re buying or selling on eBay, you will no doubt get emails from them containing a link to the item you’re buying or selling.
When you do get an email with the link to your item, click on the item link and it will take you to your item.
As the eBay page opens, you will see the annoying message, ‘Update Required’
DO NOT click the ‘EXIT’ button within the ‘Update’ box, but simply go back to your email message and click the same item link and you should be taken to your eBay item minus the ‘Update Required’ message.
It’s not a permanent fix, but it should give you access to the app.
Good luck !

·11 months agoI'll probably have to upgrade my phone soon anyway, as it's starting to get a bit glitchy, and the battery barely lasts a day even with light use. But I'll be darned if I buy a new phone just for an app.
For Boots and John Lewis I'll just have to remember to log in to my accounts using a browser to see what offers and competitions etc. there are. More long-winded, but it's what we had to do before apps came along (and, incredible though it must seem to the younger generation, we even managed to live just fine before the Internet and mobile phones). It's scary how quickly we can get accustomed to convenience, and how aggressively digital options only are being pushed by corporate and governmental forces. Great Western Railways no longer produce printed timetables, not for all services anyway, and certainly not for my local branch line - instead you have to use their website or app (or hope that the counter staff will have one of the copies that they've thoughtfully printed out).
As for the eBay app, the platform and some sellers potentially lose out. Now that I can no longer receive app notifications about auctions I'm interested in ending soon, I'm more likely to forget to bid, and it's perfectly possible that I would have bid more than the actual winning bid.
meteorcloud57
·11 months agoI'm probably around your age group. Yes we are on the cusp of being totally at the mercy of the digital age. Unless you go off it to the wilds of Canada or some other wilderness you won't be able to exist. Everything will be logged by governments, there will be no cash and what promised to be a wonderful thing (the internet) will work against us. Like every generation, we point out how "it was better in my day", well in some ways it was but we pay a heavy price for the benefits the modern age brings. Like you, I will get ebay done on my phone browser and on my PC. Incidentally, I think ebay is not the great thing it was. Time for competition I think.

I love tech, and sadly know too much about it and what they say is the future , just takes me to Terminator 2 and 3, and the other films.
A I, will be our masters........
Anyway back to eBay, yes it's gone down so much in product quality ect, them changing the app to a version way beyond it needed, crikey, i ve got bank apps still that work on V 7.0.
But they have saved me so much money since then and i don't miss it.
Having the app and if your killing time, you'd have a look and buy stuff you didn't really need, so know if I need something I just go to Amazon prime, 30days free returns and if ordered before midnight i get it first thing in morning, no waiting 2 weeks and then battling with emails if it's wrong, defective and paying the post back...
Kindest regards
meteorcloud57
·11 months agoSeems we have to bin perfectly good electronics and buy updated kit just to use apps. It's a massive scam, it disrespects customers, involves us to sink substantial investment into new equipment and impacts the environment badly.
retroman303
·11 months agoI doubt many would disagree with that.
I lost the use of the eBay app (generally rubbish, but useful for notifications) back in April or whenever it was they released their update. My phone runs on Android 9 and can't be updated to a later version.
Since then I've also had to uninstall the John Lewis and Boots apps for the same reason - 'Your phone does not support the current version of the app'.
The app for Amazon - a massive company if ever there was one - still works fine. Hopefully, I haven't just jinxed that.
Some posters have reported that the eBay app doesn't work on their phones that are supposedly compatible.
*bleep* Jones in the film RoboCop (I'll do eBay's 'bleep', save the AI/mods a job) summed up the capitalist ideal of built-in product obsolescence when talking about his ED-209 project, which was released into the field without adequate testing and with known faults (sound familiar?). I can't remember the exact words, but it was along the lines of: "We've got contracts for 10 years - servicing, upgrades, spare parts... Who cares whether it works or not?"

If you’re buying or selling on eBay, you will no doubt get emails from them containing a link to the item you’re buying or selling.
When you do get an email with the link to your item, click on the item link and it will take you to your item.
As the eBay page opens, you will see the annoying message, ‘Update Required’
DO NOT click ‘EXIT’ button within the ‘Update’ box, but simply go back to your email message and click the same item link and you should be taken to your eBay item minus the ‘Update Required’ message.
It’s not a permanent fix, but it should give you access to the app.
Good luck !
norrie4343
·1 year agothat does not work, i contacted ebay customer service about this problem and they are basically not interested. if you have an android 10 phone or older they have cancelled you, i put it to them that all other buying and selling apps work fine on older phones and only ebay does not work. this is either just down to lazy programming or trying to push people to buy new phones but just as i have done most people just got rid of the app so its an own goal by ebay.

·1 year agoJust had to force install the latest apk on my Android 9 phone - which works fine and I have no intention of replacing - and what do you know, the app runs just fine.
Silly move by eBay to restrict this, there's obvious dangers of people installing apk's themselves so definitely be aware of this.
theeightees
·8 months agoHi there, just a quick question, how would one "force" install the APK onto there old device, or what did you do? i have so far spoofed the app version on an android 8 tablet to the newer version code which does run, but with the old "Hamburger" 2023/2024 Pre UI change layout, so i would rather force install the latest apk, i can tell that it would work too as the forced "update" banner does not stop the app from working underneath, meaning that the only thing that has changed is a line of code that forces this popup to appear, so if it was not for that as you most likely know the app would still function exactly the same, kind regards.

·8 months agoHello, sorry for the slow reply. You would need a copy of the correct apk first, you'll find these with google. Be selective and careful when downloading apks, APKmirror is a good source but always download apks with caution and be aware of the risks, the files can be tampered with of course.
You will have to enable installation from unknown sources in your phone's settings. Google can help you here. After that you can just 'run' the apk file on the phone - easiest to download it using the phone - and it will start the installer.

·7 months agoHello, thank you for the reply.
I think there has been a bit of confusion, i know the steps to install an APK, but the confusion is over how you installed an android 10 + version of the ebay APK on your android 9 device, attempting to do so would usually result in an app not installed error due to code version mismatches with the installation process, or the file not being readable at all, did you force install using the normal apk installer, or a commandline such as ADB (Android debug bridge?) kind regards.

We all know it's a massive scam to get us to buy new phones/tablets every so often...can anyone tell me what is SO advanced in the new tech that makes apps such as the bbc weather app not work on my old ipad?....nope,me neither.
What some of these companies taking part in this scam need to realise is that if we can't use their apps,we can't spend our dosh on them.

·1 year agoSo I have once again been in contact with eBay CS to ask a question (I am blocked from complaining!!)
"Is there going to be a fix to this issue affecting so many and if so how long will we be waiting?"
Their response is that:-
'it isn't their fault'
'you need a phone that supports the new APP'
'they are not intending to fix things, as the APP is not supported by your phone'.
'you need to use google and type in ebay.co.uk'
My sales over the past two weeks are down 80%, so at least their income from their fees has fallen the same.

·1 year agoTo all that can’t update the app. Most people using this forum have been through similar problems. I wasted 3-4 hours trying to upgrade the app in vain. My phone = Galaxy S7, Android 8.
An Android device needs to be Android 10 or higher.
An Apple device needs to be iOS 17 or higher. iOS 16 can be used, although you may get a message saying it has to be iOS 17.
The Play Store and Apple Store are platforms publishing software and updates. The actual software is provided by the manufacturer of your device. Leaving feedback will warn other people about the problems.
eBay can still be accessed at www.ebay.co.uk via a computer, mobile phone or tablet browser. You must delete the app before accessing the website. There are other ways around it but I don’t want to complicate things. I mainly use the website and hardly use the app (used to use the app). I can no longer access the app and will not be buying a new phone, Unless someone has a spare £500-£1000 they would like to donate.
If you have a device the app can run on and it still doesn’t work, I’m stumped. The operating system may be corrupted. The only thing I can think of, is to do a clean Android or iOS install on your device and try again. This means losing all your data. It’s not something I would like to do but maybe the only answer. The Android or iOS version needs to be genuine. There’s no telling what’s in an unofficial version. If all else fails please contact eBay and post your results here. It may help someone else.

·1 year agoThe highlighted bit isn't quite correct.
The Android and iOS operating systems are written by Google and Apple respectively. In the case of Android the OS is then usually customised by the individual device manufacturer.
The Apps on the Google Play Store and Apple Store are written by the individual App developers using either Google's Android software development kit or Apple's.
