·3 years agoYes. Up in the Highlands. No arable if that's what you mean. Acres to the sheep, not sheep to the acre. Yes, tragedies, though over some decades. Still brings tears to my eyes , some of them.

·3 years agoSad but it's a good age for a dog. They never live long enough 😞

OP3 years agoI meet a few very old dogs at the lake, two are 17 and one's 18.

·3 years agoWe had a couple reached 18/ 19. Garry, a Jack Russell and Dan , a toy poodle, but the bigger dogs, and we had dozens of them, tended not to get past 15.

OP3 years agoGood ages those, my dogs over the years have only been 7, 14, 10 (a few) and 12. It's 8 years since I last had a dog.

·3 years agoWe did have our tragedies. Kep died of bone cancer aged 2 1/2, Luna of cancer aged 8, Risga run over in the farm yard by a lost tourist, aged 5, 😭 , Molly, a collie ran over a cliff chasing a sheep..she ignored the FiL whistling her back. She was 5 . Tessie was 3 when she was trapped by the Forestry Commission worker who decided it was a good idea to put a fox trap in the shared boundary fence. We had 5000 acres, so the dogs were free range . We didn't expect an illegal trap from the FC.

OP2 years agoI watched a very old episode of Road Wars and guess who was making an appearance?
Yep, you guessed it, Police Dog Finn. That was before his injuries. He looked young and keen.

OP9 years agoLatest news on this:-
The Government has changed its response to this petition.
The change is in the third and fourth paragraphs of the main text. The new version reads:
"Whilst police leaders and campaigners agree that these penalties are appropriate, I understand that it is unpalatable to think of police animals as ‘equipment’ as is inferred by the charges of criminal damage. This does not seem to convey the respect and gratitude police and public feel for the animals involved and their contribution to law enforcement and public safety. The Government has therefore agreed to explore whether there is more that the law should do to offer the most appropriate protections to police animals and all working animals.
When sentencing for offences of cruelty to or neglect of animals it is for the courts to decide on an appropriate penalty based on the individual circumstances of each case. Magistrates are provided with guidelines by the Sentencing Council to help them impose appropriate sentences and penalties. The guidelines give examples of offences, aggravating and mitigating factors, as well as the range of suggested sentences and penalties for various types of offences. The Government has requested that the Sentencing Council considers assaults on police animals as an aggravating factor as a part of their current review on guidelines for sentencing in the Magistrates’ Courts, which includes animal cruelty offences."

·9 years agoI agree, it makes far more sense to bring animal cruelty into consideration when sentencing. But I still think the penalties for such cruelty are woefully inadequate.
