Tracking number scamming attempt
Summary: 582scoooo described a situation where a seller allegedly tried to scam them on eBay by using a false tracking number. After opening a DNR case, they discovered through FedEx that the tracking number belonged to a business unconnected to their purchase. Despite having proof, eBay's automated process initially did not resolve the issue. However, eBay eventually issued a courtesy refund to 582scoooo, allowing the seller to keep their funds. 582scoooo expressed frustration with eBay's system, and wgwillia agreed, commenting that eBay is ineffective.
Hi all, it seems like a seller has tried to scam me using a false tracking number.
Bought an item from ebay, took ages to dispatch so cancelled the order. Seller rejected the cancellation as the item was 'dispatched', and uploaded a tracking number for Fed Ex on the 11th August. Tracking said the item was delivered on the 10th, and the delivered postcode was different to ours, and was signed by a person that wasn't myself or my partner. Alarm bells went off, and I opened a DNR case on ebay.
Through some detective work via fedex I managed to find out that the delivery postcode for the tracking number was for a business 30 miles from my property, and was dispatched by another business not on ebay. I have since been in touch with that business and have evidence that they created the tracking number for their package, and also have written confirmation from Fed Ex that the tracking number was created by that business and never for by an ebay customer.
I have submitted messages on ebay saying I have written proof that the seller used a bogus tracking number and has falsified delivery. The seller has only responded saying 'no, items delivered'. The automated process says that ebay will intervene on 18th august should I need more help.
Is there anyway I can escalate this in the meantime? This is obviously a scam and I have all the proof. But so far I cannot see a way past this automated process.
Thanks all.

·3 weeks agoIf - in effect - something is not delivered by eBay's estimate you do not need to contact eBay you simply open a case for "I did not receive the item" and escalate the case after 3 days. I am not sure whether you did that or tried some do-it-yourself message. As to feedback eBay has rules! No mention is allowed of "scam" or the like. "Negative" + something simple such as "poor transaction"

OP3 weeks agoI opened a did not receive item. Ebay have refunded me as a goodwill gesture, so the seller gets to keep his money as well. All my feedback said was 'seller provided incorrect tracking number, item never received, poor communication'. That's just honest and true.

OP3 weeks ago · EditedJust to update. Ebay have refunded me as a 'one off courtesy refund'. So the seller gets to keep their money and potentially scam more people in the future! What a joke of a system.
I have explained 3 times to customer services now that the tracking number was a duplicate and I have written proof showing this.
I also left negative feedback to the seller, which was removed 10 minutes later. Laughable.
So incredibly frustrating.
