Return on Hold
Summary: hamble28 is concerned about a return process involving a £300 item not as described, returned to a private seller. The seller has escalated the case, and hamble28 worries the seller might falsely claim a different item was returned or that it was damaged. A customer service agent reassured them but was not helpful in addressing the specific concerns. They are uncertain about the potential outcome and whether they might lose their money.
I returned a £300 item to a private seller as it was not as described. It arrived back today but I have now recieved a message that the case is on hold as the seller has escalated the case and has been given five days to provide documentation.
I am concerned that the seller will try to claim I returned a different item or damaged it, which I did not. I just had a callback but as expected, the CS agent got the wrong end of the stick and was less than helpful, just kept telling me not to worry.
What could the seller be doing - it seems perfectly straight forward to me. Item was advertised as being made from X, it is actually made from Y and as I cannot use an item made from Y I returned it in good faith.
Could I lose my money?

OP1 month agoUpdate as nobody replied to this - 24 hours after the return was delivered back to the seller I received an email saying I have been given a ‘courtesy refund’ as the seller had raised a concern about the condition of the returned item.
I sent it back in exactly the same condition as it was sent. I don’t like to think of the seller getting the dress back in perfect condition (they have already relisted it) and £300 while I get a warning but if that is the case then I accept there’s nothing I can do. I have reported the seller and left negative feedback.
I certainly won’t be buying on eBay again.
