Clever scams from ebay sellers
Summary: jimatliv shared an experience of purchasing a fraudulent 2TB SSD drive from a seller, which turned out to be a scam. After initially starting a refund process, the seller tricked them into closing their current return, ultimately only offering a 40% refund. jimatliv expressed frustration with eBay's lack of action and warned others about similar scams. sml192 advised jimatliv to contact their payment provider or file a dispute with services like PayPal or their credit card issuer to try to recover their money.
I bought a 2Tb external SSD drive from a seller and it turned out to be a false item. Much smaller than it reported and overwrote data after 100Gb or so. If you had precious data on this you would lose it all. I started a refund with the seller expecting to get my money back. The scam then starts. The seller asked that I start a new return stating the device is defective and I would get immediate refund. When I closed my current return....that was it I couldn't start a new one. Good plan by the seller to keep the cash. Eventually I was offered 40% of what I had paid. So seller would keep 60% of payment for an item I could do nothing with. Ebay didn't want to know. So I am stuck hoping that seller does the decent thing and pays up. Not holding my breath though. If this (and it seems from posts that it is) a common scam the seller is creaming off a lot of cash with no recourse. I have repoited the scam to Ebay but the listing is still there scamming others. Do not be fooled these devices look like they are working but they are rigged to report false sizes. Do not buy.

·2 weeks ago · EditedAs you have found out you only get one chance at a return with eBay. You need to contact your payment provider now, if applicable. If you paid using PayPal then you have 30 days from date of delivery in which to open an 'Item not as described' payment dispute. If you paid with a credit/debit card or used Klarna then you have 120 days from date of purchase within which to file a Chargeback with your Card Issuer/open a dispute with Klarna.
