Buyer offer & purchase via messaging

A friend was watching a motor starter roller on eBay which sold. A couple of days later the seller approached him via eBay messaging saying it didn’t work for the purchaser and it was available again. He had a look, went to the sellers home, didn’t feel like he was being scammed, roller worked in situ (without the a load on it) and bought it. However, with the bike on it, the motor immediately burnt out.
Genuinely don’t believe the seller was dodgy, just ill informed or the previous buyer had damaged it. However, he won’t know accept that it wasn’t as he described it (ie suitable for purpose).
Payment made via bank transfer.
I don’t suppose there’s anything he can do is there? Apart from take it as a lesson learned. It didn’t really occur to him that it was outside of eBay as all the contact was through eBay’s messaging.
Any thoughts welcome as I feel really sorry for him.

·3 weeks agoyep - nothing that can be done as it was all done outside ebay and by bank transfer.
to be fair, I assume it was listed in vehicles so there may not have been any protection even on ebay.
But they'll just have to take this one on the chin.
