30 minutes ago I went through a 30 minute phone call with customer service re the same problem. I don’t have or want a credit card. I’m 72 years old. I have held an eBay account for 23 years, I want to buy small electronic side cutters (7.5mm blade length, my finger nail clippers are longer). Only to be told I need to prove by credit card I’m over 18.
It was suggested by customer service that I get someone to purchase for me
You may have been told a little too harshly, but some CS agents do not have English as their first language, however, they are correct, if you do not have a credit card and wish to buy this item on eBay, it's best to ask a friend or family member to buy this item for you , those who have a credit card on their eBay account.
What you were advised was correct. If you don’t have a credit card to provide details of with your name and address, your options are buy elsewhere or get someone to buy it on their account.
I have the same problem, cant buy a cutting disc for angle grinder. 9 years on eBay and they ask me to verify to buy a disc ! I was calling their”help” service - they told me to ask someone to buy it for me- this is so ridiculous. ebay bocome a real s.it
For eBay? You cannot. A credit card is the only form of verification eBay accept that you are over the age of 18 .
Those Credit card Companies have already done their stringent checks on the holders of those cards, so to save time and money, eBay use those checks for their own benefit.
The only way round this for you, is to ask a friend or family member who has a credit card on their eBay account, to buy this item for you.
verification by credit card only is a poor set up, my hobby is woodwork, which means sharp blades of tools. I,m nearly 80, not a hooligon. just have to buy elseware.
eBay's stance is that it's the cheapest method, as a credit card owner has been strictly checked to be sure of their age already by those Companies, and eBay then take on board this, and use their verification process as one being checked and paid for, and not by eBay!
Many other forms , passports driving licenses, etc. are available true, but then that would mean to employ a team to then check that paperwork, which means a cost , and of course that would only end up being passed onto members, not a popular move.

It's all a matter of money saving !
