Scam email warning
Summary: norfolksofleeds warned other sellers about a convincing scam email claiming to be from eBay, requesting users to update their account information via a fake link. The email is identified as a scam due to the sender's email address and the use of generic salutations like 'Dear User'. tressygirl added that eBay never asks for sensitive information nor uses threatening language, and the email should be forwarded to spoof@ebay.co.uk for verification. c_of_e84 reiterated forwarding the email to eBay's spoof addresses.
Hi I just wanted to warn other sellers of a scam doing the rounds and looks quite convincing, they email you directly with the title
"Fw: An action is required on your eBay account",
Inside the email it reads:
Important eBay Notice
Dear User, there is a problem with your eBay account.
Case number: #1217732
To continue using our platform, please update your information via the link below; otherwise, we will be forced to take appropriate action.
Link to confirm identify
Please act quickly.
The link to a fake eBay page where it asks for bank card details
The email address was the giveaway as it was not an eBay email address it was forms.elfsightmail.com
If this happens to you please
Don't click any links in the email or open any attachments.
Forward the message to eBay as an attachment at spoof@ebay.co.uk.
They'll let you know that we received the email.
Recognising legitimate contacts from eBay
If we need to contact you about your account, you can expect the following:
We'll never ask you to provide confidential information like your password or credit card details
We'll only include links for convenience. No link will require you to submit confidential information on the next page
We won't include attachments. If you receive an unsolicited email with an attachment, don't open it
We'll never use threatening language
We'll always send a copy of any important messages to your eBay Messages

·2 weeks agoThank you for the warning and hopefully others will read it.
Just to add the one glaring clue right at the start of the message that this is a scam, is that eBay will never address you by ' Dear User', but will always address you by your real name. It's important not to use your real name in your username ID for this reason.
Let's hope anyone receiving this will also realise eBay would never ask for bank details in an email message.
