Ebay message to upload VAT number that i don't have.
Just had a message from ebay "We value you as an eBay seller, so we wanted to let you know that the UK Value Added Tax (VAT) information on your eBay account is either missing, invalid, or displayed incorrectly." but there's no way i've gone above the £90000 threshold, and i can't find clear instructions on how to double check it, but last few months i've hardly sold owt so will be very very surprised if i've gone above the threshold. Any advice on this welcomed. Thanks.

·2 weeks agoJust had a quick look at your last 90 days' sales and they add up to about £22,400. If the last three months haven't been quite as good as the earlier months then you probably are nudging the registration threshold. It's calculated on a rolling year so you need to keep a close eye on it pretty much on a daily basis.
Even if you haven't quite reached it yet, as others have said, ebay always err on the side of caution and they're not likely to back down on that.

OP2 weeks ago · EditedThanks for the reply. i was worried about it as i sell quite high value items and thought i had been keeping an eye on it so i didn't go over the threshold, but after a sale this afternoon that seems to have triggered the email from ebay, after looking it up i may be able to apply for an exemption if i'm not going to go over the threshold all year round, but i only had a quick look so need to do more research on it tomorrow, i've not even been registered as a sole trader for a year yet so this has taken me a bit by surprise. just totted it up and last 90 days = £19739.5 , but looking at last year sept+october were 19625.79 so looks like i have gone over the threshold, and yet i'm skint :/ damn it.

·2 weeks agoSurely as a business you must have some idea of what your turnover is for the last 12 months? If it is anywhere near £90,000 then it will trigger the request from eBay. They don't wait until you actually reach or exceed the threshold as where VAT is concerned they are held jointly and severely liable.

OP2 weeks agoI've only been registered as a sole trader since 25/09/2025 and haven't yet submitted my tax return for the last year(has to be in by January 2027) , guess i'm close to the threshold but i find the new seller hub layout confusing and can't see how to generate the correct report to check if it's correct. i guess as i only sell second hand items i can get on the margin scheme but as i'm already quite skint paying another 16.9% on my sales would be crippling :/

·2 weeks agoThe VAT margin scheme is a nightmare, you won't find any software that supports it. I tried, was easier to just with the standard vat scheme.

OP2 weeks agoOk thanks for that info, but that'd mean paying way more in VAT than i would under the margin scheme, i'd pay VAT on the price of the whole sale rather than just VAT on the profit i made, tbh it's taken me by surprise i've even got anywhere near the threshold considering the poor amount of sales i've had since march.

·2 weeks agoJoin the flat rate scheme and pay 7.5% like we do. You can then turnover 150k

OP2 weeks agoThanks for the reply, ill defo look into this as the margin scheme does seem like it'll be a PITA.
