Buyer wants to return the item meant to go to his neighbour
Summary: dealzee faced an issue where a buyer claimed the wrong item was received and wanted to return it. The photos provided by the buyer showed an item from a different seller with a different address. dealzee was concerned about receiving an incorrect item back and discussed potential actions with other participants. Various suggestions were made, including reporting the issue to eBay and documenting any discrepancies. dealzee eventually reported the case to eBay, which ruled in their favor, allowing them to keep the money and resolving the issue.
Hello,everyone
The title here is a bit tricky so I will explain everything here.
So the buyer opened a return request 19th of august with reason "item not as described" . His parcel was delivered 13th of august.
In the comments buyer added 2 photos of the parcel and commented that the parcel he has received is not what he ordered and he thinks it should be delivered to his neighbour, and said that he will return me this parcel because he thinks there was a mismatch done by the carrier.
Ive checked the photos he added and the parcel is with a different address and from different seller not me. Ive contacted a buyer but no answer(however he may still answer later on).
What if the buyer returns to me this parcel?

I have reported the buyer and opened case as the wrong item sent back. Ebay returned the buyer from its own fund and let me keep the money as well

·3 weeks agoHi dealzee,
I had a very similar situation on eBay recently. I originally sold and shipped a ceiling light. Out of nowhere, the buyer opened a return request, and in the attached photos, they showed a 2-metre long weightlifting barbell, claiming that is what I sent them! Just like in your case, they completely ignored all my messages.
When the barbell was actually returned and delivered to me, the mystery solved itself. The packaging had TWO shipping labels stuck to it: my return label, and another label from the original sender! I actually contacted the gym equipment company from that second label, and they arranged to collect their barbell from me.
Dealing with eBay was the easy part. I used the "Report a problem" button, stated clearly that I received a completely different item, and eBay resolved it in my favour.
The real nightmare was with Packlink. Packlink actually insisted that I was the one who originally dispatched that 2-metre barbell! They hit me with a £40 penalty surcharge for sending an oversized parcel. I had to fight the charge by pointing out that I dispatched my original parcel via a DPD drop-off point. As anyone using DPD knows, they have a strict maximum length limit of 60 cm. There is absolutely no physical way a 2-metre barbell could have ever been scanned in there!
Definitely inspect the packaging of that pipe for a second shipping label – you might find out who it actually belongs to! Report your case as "returned a different item" and stand your ground. But also, keep a close eye on your courier account – make sure the courier doesn't try to falsely charge you for dispatching an oversized pipe in the first place! Good luck!

·3 weeks ago · EditedYou have been told what to do.
Your problem is that your buyer did not get what they ordered and as a business seller the courier is your agent so that is your problem.

OP3 weeks agoUpdate: buyer did not answer and sent the item back. I assume the one that he has received which supposed to be his neighbours

·3 weeks agoYou don't really have any choice but to accept INR returns due to eBay's Money Back Guarantee.
Was it a valuable item?
dealzee
OP3 weeks agoI know that, the question wasnt about accepting or not,but what should I do when I will receive not my item,if the buyer chose a reason that he has received the wrong item.

·3 weeks agoIt really depends upon the value.
If it's a valuable item you need to do the following in this exact order:
When you receive the item back file a report with Report Fraud. They're unlikely to actually do anything but they will give you a report and a reference number.
In the case there will be a link that states "Report a problem". This is not the link that states "Ask eBay to step in"; it will specifically state "Report a problem". Click that link and select "Returned a different item" as the reason. The link doesn't usually appear until return tracking shows a delivery or an attempted delivery scan.
In your report to eBay you need to include the reference number from Report Fraud in #1 and attach the report they gave you.
If the item isn't valuable - i.e. it isn't worth making a fuss over - you only need to complete step #2. Which item was it?

OP3 weeks agoThanks for the reply, valuable or not valuable item,I had too many cases which were fraudulent that if i will start to just easily accept everything there will be more and more of it happening because Im gonna be an easy target. If i can clearly see that there is a scam going on which is usually very obvious then no matter the value I will do everything so even if ebay will stand on buyers side its not gonna be that easy for the scamming buyers

·3 weeks agoIf the buyer doesn’t respond they can’t complain if you go into self preservation mode. So many questions… it would be interesting to hear what they actually send back.

·3 weeks agoSo do you think this was genuinely his neighbours parcel? It looks new haha. Any old shipping label still on it or an invoice inside to support his story?
dealzee
OP3 weeks agoIt was definitely someone elses item because in the attached photos for the case I could see different name. However not everything was visible. Now when i have received this item bsck it had the previous label ripped off so im unabke to say.

·3 weeks agoIf you did a poll on what people here would do next I don’t think there would be a unanimous answer.
I’d be thinking so this guy gets his neighbours parcel and sits on it for 6 days before deciding to send it to you. That is a weird thing to do in itself, I’d be unhappy if my neighbour did this to me.
If the courier had 2 parcels in hand and just made a mistake by delivering them the wrong way round he could have sorted this out with the other house. Who’s to know he didn’t get both and after 6 days he had a lightbulb moment. Did it even arrive within that timescale or has he been sitting on it for a while? I’d have loved to have checked the tracking on the other parcel to look for the date on it.
When someone is being very slow and deliberate like this and uncommunicative it is a red flag for me but maybe they are just a bit dense.

·3 weeks ago · EditedDid the carrier you used to ship the item provide a delivery photo?
Presumably the photo your buyer sent showed which carrier handled the package they claim to have received? If so, is it the same carrier you used?
dealzee
OP3 weeks agoThere is no photo,I used yodel by inpost . The parcel delivered to buyer was by yodel because I can see it from his photos but the sender is other business.

·3 weeks ago · EditedIt’s beyond me why he isn’t going to the neighbour and doing a swap.
Let’s say the buyer isn’t trying an elaborate scam on with you. In theory you can still dispute it with eBay by telling them you were returned a different item than was sent but it is a tricky situation. In your shoes what I do depends on the value of your order and the value of the item you get back in the post.

OP3 weeks agoI think it will be tricky now if the buyer returns different item because thats why he has opened a return request. Hopefully he answer and this can be sorted, but thats a very weird request i got and explanation from thr buyer
