What sort of marketing nounce or integrity does eBay have if it doesn't automatically apply discount codes to eligible goods?

I received an email today, that said 'my coupon' had arrived.

If I bought something that was eligible for a discount, I'd get it, but only if I copied the code, searched for and found an item, and at the billing stage added the discount code.

If a retail shop is having a sale, and/or giving discounts for certain items, then when a customer buys it, they are charged the discounted price.

Granted a few shysters may charge full price if they think the customer is a mug, but the majority have integrity, and charge the right price.

So why not ebay?

I suppose it's just greed - if it sells at full price they receive a higher fee.

Or marketing stupidity - advise there is a discount, don't give the discount if you can get away with it.

Or am I being too cynical?

ebay get the same fee when a discount code is used, as it is ebay who are offering the discount, not the seller,

the whole point is ebay want you to see all the adverts that go with the 'code' and they don't want to give a discount to people if they don't have to.
