Question Having to refund for damage not incurred by post in Member To Member Support DO NOT DELETE

I sold an item recently and sent it off to the buyer posthaste. It was well packaged and arrived the next day. The buyer duly left feedback to say all was well. Then the next day, they contacted me wanting a refund, despite the damage described being impossible to have occured during transit - and was certainly not there before postage.I was annoyed, but suggested making a part refund as a goodwill gesture (not that I had to). They did not contact me but days later brought the case in the Resolutions Centre. I was not consulted by eBay and the decision (made the same day) was to refund the buyer against me - because I hadn't answered!!!! The item had been owned by me for 50 years without a scratch - I am now in receipt of a damaged item that I cannot resell and , guess what---cannot find how to complain to eBay because their appeal system seems not to work! Apparently, it is my fault for not taking out insurance (other than standard). I have sold another item since, but I am now contemplating leaving eBay as a member -I quite understand that buyers should be protected. No one would argue that - but sadly the system can work against sellers when unscrupulous buyers feel that if they damage an item they can send it back with impunity - and eBay will give them a full refund. Very annoyed!!
