How do I change Simple Delivery package size after selling an item as a private seller?

Hi all - I'm asking here because I can't find an answer on eBay help...

I recently sold an item with free shipping, but when I found a box suitable for packing it I found it was larger dimentions than the RM Simple Delivery 'up to 2kg' option that eBay had pre-selected for me.

I'm happy to pay for the larger size but I can't figure out a way to do this - all I get is a shipping label ready to print already in my inbox, with no option that I can see to change weight and dimentions and pay a bit more

Do I now need to pre-find a box and weight when creating the listing, or am I being a bit dense?

As someone who's sold around 400 items over the years but hasn't been using the site for maybe 12 months, I'm HATING the changes! Might even just give up...

Yo should be able to change size (but not weight). Click on Get Prepaid Label and under the heading Package details click on the pencil icon and you should get: No extra charge. Changing your package size won’t cost you anything.

If the weight is wrong you can cancel/refund the transaction with the buyer's agreement via the dropdown menu arrow for the item on your orders list. Then relist with correct postage for the buyer to buy and pay again.

The alternative would be to buy and pay for the postage yourself outside of ebay.

It's always been best to get your parcels ready for when you list so you don't under or over charge on postage.

I didn't know you could change the parcel size at no extra cost. Is this a relatively new bit of Simple Delivery tweakage? There is quite a bit of difference between the price of a Royal Mail 2kg small parcel, and a 2kg medium parcel. Strange times are these... 🤔

I offered this as free postage (as I always do), and the ebay estimated shipping cost was deducted as soon as the buyer paid, and then immediately recieved an email with a postage label link. When I came to pack the only suitable box I could find was larger than the eBay estimate - in the past I was always able to pack, then weigh and measure and select best postage based on that.

I'm usually going to have a good idea of weight/size but until it's packed I can't be 100% sure. This is what I was asking... how do I change Simple Delivery postage after ebay send me a label?

As an occasional seller now trying to clear out a few bits post retirement, this new system is really putting me off selling on eBay!

This is exactly the problem I had.

I didn't know it was going to be a medium parcel until after I packed and can't see a way of changing it once eBay sent me a postage label. I don't want to cancel and re-list as the buyer wasn't paying for postage anyway (I always sell with free postage)

How do I opt out of Simple Delivery? I can't see the answer on eBay help...

eBay wish all Private sellers to use Simple Delivery.

You don't ' have ' to, and use your own postage bought online or at the Post Office.

If you do, you will not be able to update tracking and your payout will be held for a minimum of 14 days.

Should a buyer open a case for item not received you would be able to add those tracking numbers you have, into the case details.

So, if you don't mind waiting for your payouts, you could opt out of the eligible items.

Umm, just seen the items you are selling, not really those for a Private account, which is used for selling unwanted used items such as a wardrobe , attic , garage clear out. Selling Brands new items you need a Business account , and then no more Simple Delivery problems as they will not apply to you!

See here , it's easy to change accounts to be correctly registered :

Go to Account settings in My eBay.
Select Personal information.
Select Edit next to Account type. You may be asked to sign in again.
Select Confirm to upgrade to a Business account.
Specify whether you operate your business as a legal entity or as a sole proprietor and select Continue.
On the following page, enter your business information such as name, contact information, and returns policy. Then select Save.

Probably best to use a PC / laptop for this, and not the app or mobile browser. Chrome seems to work best on eBay.

I would respectfully point out that I have no intention of registering as a business seller, either now or in the future. Registering as a business seller places additional legal, administrative, and financial obligations on me which would not be appropriate to my circumstances as a private individual disposing of personal property

As I'm sure you're already aware from other user comments, I'm finding recent changes to eBay’s private selling structure is making casual private selling considerably more complicated and less attractive - including the introduction of Buyer Protection fees, delays in seller payments until delivery confirmation, increased pressure to use eBay-managed postage systems, along with a general move towards a business-style selling environment even for private individuals simply disposing of personal possessions.

As a retired individual selling surplus service spares (and other items) accumulated over many years, I don't consider it reasonable or appropriate to be treated as a commercial business operation. My activity is purely the disposal of long-held personal items rather than ongoing trade!

My original question still stands - how do I select appropriate postage AFTER a buyer has purchased if I offer free delivery?

I'm not sure there is any way to do this with a Simple Delivery label - apart from the 'cancelling & relisting' option, but you could decide to purchase your own postage outside of eBay, then claim a refund for the unused Simple Delivery label. There is a form to fill in, and you have to wait for the refund, so it is a bit of a fiddle - but it might be the easiest way out of your current predicament.

Thanks — that’s exactly the sort of workaround I was afraid of.

It seems unnecessarily complicated for private sellers who are simply trying to clear personal items from home rather than run a business!

Under the old system it was straightforward to adjust postage after sale if needed, but with Simple Delivery everything now feels very rigid and overcomplicated. Having to buy postage elsewhere, fill in refund forms, and wait for reimbursement just adds more hassle and uncertainty. Plus it adds 14 days to delivery of sale funds and complicates tracking.

It does make me wonder if these changes have really been designed with occasional (or even regular) private sellers in mind...

Have you tried peaseblossom's instructions?

I have had to change the package size on a simple delivery label from large letter to small parcel and it was really straightforward and no extra charge. Much easier than the old days where I would have to fund the extra postage cost myself or ask the buyer if they wouyld mind payting extra.

I guess these changes have been designed with private sellers in mind as they are less likely to be sure of packing sizes and postage costs than business sellers.

Unfortunately the option to change the package size didn’t appear for me after the sale had completed - and cancelling a sale is madness when I'M paying the postage (i.e. offering free delivery)

My issue is Simple Delivery now prioritises eBay’s convenience over seller flexibility. It may suit some occasional sellers but it just creates problems: I've lost control over postage choices, and, as I've found - can’t adjust package sizes easily after sale. This, plus combined postage is now near impossible, and you’re pushed into using eBay’s carriers rather than using the most suitable service yourself.

It also feels like another way for eBay to keep the entire transaction inside their system: listing, payment, postage and disputes gives sellers less independence.

The old system wasn’t perfect, but at least I had control over how I shipped my own items!

As @**peaseblossom** has advised you can change the label size before generating the label, at no extra charge, by clicking on the pencil symbol next to package details. This is now available from both the website and the app and there are options to change both the package size and tje weight.

Unfortunately I didn't even get to see the 'package details' option shown in your (really good) screenshots...

Following the sale I got the usual eBay notification telling me an item had sold, and this included a postage label with no option to change anything that I could see (hence my original question)

I've probably sold around 400 items on eBay over the years having ben a member from 2008, so I'm not completely inxeperienced - but I've not been on eBay for about 12 months and I'm finding these recent changes to the seller experience are terrible!

Sorry, I should have added a screenshot of my original eBay notification - as you can see the only option was 'Get a prepaid label or QR code'

It was on pressing that link that I then recieved the label with no option to change - and I definitely didn't get to see the 'package details' screen that you posted

Absolutely. The way I see it, the whole point of private selling was for all the many & varied small sellers to be able to 'do their own thing', using whatever postage method was best for them - and posting when it was convenient to do so. Unfortunately, Simple Delivery & 2 day dispatch means there is little leeway for the type of seller that prefers - or needs - to have control over how they post their items.

I'm sure anyone who hasn't been selling for a while must find it all very confusing, especially if something goes wrong. Fixing an issue with Simple Delivery postage can be a right rigmarole, including having to involve the buyer.

Personally, I would much rather sort out any postage problems myself, than have all this cancelling & relisting palaver, or applying for refunds, or have the buyer get an automatic refund if they've paid the postage etc etc... 😖

I wonder whether it is new or just that I have possibly never had to print a Royal Mail SD label before. It may just relate to RM because the sizes which SD gives are based around RM sizes which don't relate to Evri and Yodel etc

I also got that pop-up notification today - I'm sure it wasn't there the last time I had to post an item. I'm surprised it says 'if your parcel needs to be heavier or larger, you can change it at no extra cost'... I thought it was just larger parcel labels that we are being told can be adjusted?

It is available for Evri labels aswell.

Royal Mail business contracts only use weight bands, same as the other carriers, other than separating Large Letters from parcels.

When eBay first published the prices for Simple Delivery at the beginning of last year there was only one price for each weight band for both Evri and Royal Mail. Separate prices for small and medium parcels were then introduced in May after people complained that the original prices for Royal Mail were too high for small parcels.
