What is going on with viewing totals on ebay? The other day I had something like 12 views for an item I listed under a week ago, then those views suddenly disappeared and it now says 2. I have had other items that have lost views as well. Sometimes you get a number of views for a newly listed item then they just stop dead and rarely increase. It's often impossible to tell if a listing is getting views or not.

Just a heads up because you may be heading for grief with HMRC as you appear to be unaware that you should be trading on an eBay business account.

A private seller is one who is just selling off their own personal items such clothes from their wardrobe, bits from their loft/garage etc.

A Business seller is someone who buys or makes items to sell on. They need to be registered as a business to meet the requirements of UK law. They need to declare income to HMRC once they reach £1,000 worth of sales (eBay will be providing HMRC with your details anyway as you've sold over 30 items so it's vital to keep correct accounts for your tax return). You can obviously offset more expenses as a business seller, but can't offset any at all as a private one.

To register as a business seller simply go to your Personal Information in your account and to the right of Account Type, which will be showing as 'Individual' you'll see an Edit option.

https://accountsettings.ebay.co.uk/profile

This doesn't affect your feedback profile or any current listings, it merely upgrades your account so that you're compliant with current consumer and eBay policy.

If you're also selling your own items, just open another eBay account (you can have more than one).

I do agree that newly listed items quickly get one or two views which then dissappear a couple of days or so later. This also tallys with the overview screen which shows loads of external views and then removes them a day or so later.

It’s more that they are all in the wrong category so you are going to struggle to get relevant views, not that any are fake views. The item specifics help you in the search as well and you don’t have any of those so you’re relying purely on buyers finding you by title search. If they are searching by category rather than site wide your items just won’t show up.

If these were mine I’d cancel every one of them and re-list so they get indexed properly on the site. Ideally, if you re-take the photos in natural light it will help them stand out as there is a slight dullness. Buyers are often scrolling fast on search you need your listings to make them stop and look rather than discount them.

I was watching some coin auctions the other day, the same coin over and over in very similar condition from different sellers. It was striking how the best photos were reaching £40 and the ones that were smaller resolution and less clear had fewer watchers and went for nearer £30.

Well they seem to be incredibly helpful advice for gaining views.....but a bit off what I said, regardless of what category its under or what item I'm selling, when I list I will always get 2 views and when it relists its always 0, it seems more like a gimmick to me, I've been reading about Ebays troubles and the decline in members sales it wouldn't surprise me if its a sales (or listing) technique

I can’t say they aren’t playing with view counts with any authority but I’d like to think that they aren’t. Even if they were, as long as your items are being seen in the right category by real buyers you always have half a chance. There are still a lot of active buyers here.

Yeah I can see what you’re saying. I prefer to look past that when I have listings that aren’t selling and narrow down on what is happening with those items on eBay.

Just as a quick experiment, a comic of yours that I looked at was outsiders five of a kind. If I search outsiders five of a kind comic on eBay as a search in all categories yours does appear there. When you look at the alternatives you can see other sellers are choosing to bundle with other comics. If you filter to solds you can see they aren’t selling regularly and most sales seemed to be from the USA. Again I’m probably not going down the road you want but the low view counts are what I’d expect with a comic that is difficult to sell.

Noticed it happening around 6 months ago. An item can have 10 views and in the next day or so it could drop down the 7, but someone mentioned it could be ebay removing bot views. No idea how that all works but it kinnda made sense.

Have one listing at the min that has 0 views but has a watcher? that's pretty weird.

It is pretty annoying though as used to gauge interest in items via the views and adjust prices if a item had a lot of views but wasn't selling, but it's just unreliable now and don't take any notice of them.

When we search we can just heart something to add to the watch list without clicking into the item. I notice that on mine sometimes with 0 views and a watcher, it just tells me it’s likely a half hearted buyer or someone who is going to come back later and view it when they have more time.

With the views debate, who knows. I don’t really care what they do as long as the item is visible. I’ve got some stamp auctions running now, I knew when I put a couple up this may be a total waste of time and sure enough they have 0 views in over 4 days. Others that I thought may be worth a go have a lot more views, a couple of watchers and 1 has got a bid. I don’t know a lot about stamps but I trust eBay enough to know if they were any cop they’d get some interest and if not I’ll just accept it was a mistake on my part to put them up.
