This is taken from a notice posted at the first post-war Ideal Home Exhibition in Olympia in 1947 under the heading 'The Day To Day Plan For New Brides'

Monday. Is not esssentially a day for laundry. Scour the kitchen after weekend catering activities, check up on rations and shop for vegetables, canned foods and breakfast cereals for a few days ahead.

Tuesday. Manage the light personal laundry leaving the sheets and bath towels. Get all items dried and ironed during the day whenever possible.

Wednesday. Clean thoroughly bedrooms and bathrooms and use early afternoon for silver cleaning.

Thursday. Change bedlinen, launder 'heavies'. While they dry, clean the lounge. Iron early afternoon.

Friday. Plan meals for weekend, making provision for Monday leftovers. Shop. Give dining room a thorough clean and polish.

Saturday. Keep this free for the family as far as possible. Prepare vegetables for Sunday and manage some cooking in the morning. Then relax.

Sunday. Belongs to you and those who share the house with you. Confine all essential cooking to early part of the morning.

What you wear in the house for the working hours is important. Crisp, easily removed gay overalls, smocks, nylon or plastic aprons look attractive. Don't neglect your personal appearance whilst working in the home. Dress attractively and wear your hair as you would do for the man of the house's homecoming.

I wish I had a £1 for every hour I spent ironing sheets, towels, socks, pants, tea towels etc in my younger days. My mother taught me housekeeping...but then I had an awakening and learned how to 'whittle '. I'm not going to be on my deathbed thinking 'I should have done more ironing'! 😊

I only iron things that other people get to see, and that doesn't include sheets, towels, socks, pants, and tea towels.

I ironed an item once.....my now ex told the boys to 'get a camera..your mothers got an iron in her hand'

If it needs ironed, I don't buy it.

I used to like Quentin Crisp's philosophy...the dust doesn't get any worse after 4 years

When I moved in here to the main house, it was like a cross between Steptoe and Son and Miss Haversham's.
It's still Steptoe and Son

I will polish the silver on a Wednesday, if they think that's a good day...once a year, whether it needs it or not. 😀

I suppose lazing around in a dressing gown doesn't count as getting dressed nicely for your husband either.

Sometimes the thought of doing housework is worse than the reality.

Once I actually motivate myself to get going, music blaring, singing and throwing a few shapes while I hoover and polish, it's not so bad and I love sitting back afterwards admiring my clean, sparkly house.

I'm a bit of minimalist so I hate clutter and mess anyway.

Ironing though...hmm what's that?
