BBC Children in Need - how to support charities when you sell on eBay
Nov 13, 2012 03:41 PM

Hello all,

This is Nick from the eBay for Charity team, with a quick reminder about BBC Children in Need.

The appeal show is this Friday, 16th November.  Many eBay members have supported BBC Children in Need on eBay.co.uk since eBay for Charity first launched in 2005, raising over £1.5m so far.

If you’ve not yet used eBay for Charity when you list, it’s simple to do. Just:

1)     Choose a charity and percentage to donate when you list an item,

2)     Wait for the donation to be collected automatically by MissionFish UK after the item sells.

All charity items stand out in search with a special charity ribbon, giving them extra prominence against competing listings. You’ll also get a fee credit on your basic insertion and final value fees equal to the percentage of the sale you donate.

BBC Children in Need gives grants to projects in the UK that focus on children and young people who are disadvantaged. They support small and large organisations that empower children and extend their life choices.

If you’d like to support BBC Children in Need on eBay, just make them a favourite charity and they’ll appear in the form next time you list. You can choose other favourites from our database of over 7,000 UK charities.

You can also buy official Pudsey merchandise and bid on unique items and one-off experiences from the BBC Children in Need eBay store.

In total, eBay members have raised over £39m for UK charities, large and small, on eBay.co.uk. You can find more details about selling with eBay for Charity here, and see what some eBay members are already selling on this thread.

Regards,

Nick

Hello Nick

It is a real pity that this thread couldn't have been posted on Seller and Buyer Central where it would attract more attention.

The Charity board really doesn't get a lot of visitors or posts. :(

However, we are grateful for small mercies so thank you for drawing attention to the eBay Community Children in Need thread. :)

What you see is not what you always get. Please read the description.

Hello Nick,

Many thanks for the visit.  It's lovely to know that eBay are well aware of the money raised for Children in Need and other charities.

Thanks also for reminding people about the appeal show on Friday, and the link to the thread.

Fabulous! :-x

Thanks for the replies!

The post has been promoted so it's visible to a much wider audience. For instance, it's featured on the front page when you click on "Discussion Boards".

Huge congratulations to the-green-woman and the rest of the community for doing so well already this year.

Best wishes,

Nick

I think I have made two charity listings on eBay: a total waste of time. Buyers don't want to pay for items, they want sellers to give them away to them and then these buyers feel good as though they have made a donation: they haven't, as it is the sellers who have contributed value to charity. This matches my experience of offline charity auctions where the public turn up in droves and only the known dealers bid. Somehow, charity auctions are an orgy of self-indulgent weepy sentiment where the private buyers watch with approval and keep their hands in their pockets unless TV cameras have turned up. Then it is different.

I realise there is  serious selling for charity on eBay, where a charity sells on eBay itself and has got the economics right.

I did one listing with a 10% donation which raised Smarties and a 100% donation which didn't get a bid, but was priced at a proper market price.  My rant is more about my own limited experience. Offline, people will pay more for items if they are offered for charity; I've seen tatty items successfully sold in local charity shops for far more than local dealers have been asking for the same items in very good condition at the same time. In particular, I remember a wreck of an Ansonia gingerbread clock when a colleague had an immaculate, working one for twenty Pounds less. He had his for months more.
