Item delivered to a neighbour whilst Buyer on Holiday - Urgent help needed.
Sep 12, 2012 11:05 PM

Hi everyone,

I'm in need on urgent help.

Sorry this is a bit long winded,

My item a superdry jacket sold Thursday 6 2012 on e-bay.  The buyer paid promptly.

Not having much experience is selling cloths etc I decided that I would sent this item with the UPS courier.

This cost me much more than the e-bay postage price but I figured I would be doing my buyer a favour so he could get it quicker and safer etc.

After the courier had picked it up i marked as despached with the tracking number and contacted the buyer to tell them.

I got a reply stating he was away on holiday and would not be back for a week.

At this point I was starting to think there is going to be a problem here as he really should have told me he was away or should not have bidded.

I was right, I got delivery confirmation from UPS told me they had delivered the item and left the package with a neighbour.  The problem is they stated the door number of the neighbour was 238B and my buyers door number is 283A.  Quite a distance away from his actual next door neighbour.

The packing label was clearly marked 283A.

I of course told my buyer and you can imagine he was not happy at all. Stating he was disgusted it was left with a neighbour he does not know. Well it this is true then I don't blame him.

So what can I do here, If he gets back to me to say the neighbour does not have the package do I have to refund him?

Can I claim compensation from UPS as I can prove that they have delivered to a neighbour quite a distance from my buyer.

Any help would be appreciated

Thank you.

Wait and see what happens - the buyer may well be able to recover the parcel but if not then you'll have to take it up with the courier and refund your buyer.

You have done everything you as a seller were obligated to do you ensured delivery of the item. You can not ultimately responsible for the idiocy of the courier company.

What I find more worrying is the fact that the buyer who shoots off on holiday and knows they won't be at home to receive the item tells you they are 'disgusted' that the item has been delivered to a neighbour because they were away. Not a very considerate buyer. They should be grateful you are informing them of the whereabouts of their item while they are off sunning themselves. I don't suppose you mentioned in your listing that you were psychic and would know that they were on holiday.

You have done all you can do and ultimately you have proof of delivery. The courier company no doubt left the item with the nearest neighbour that was actually at home at the time of delivery. It really is up to the laisser faire buyers to retrieve the item from their neighbours when they decide to return from their holiday.

Hi,

It's possible that the buyer chose to bid because they are ware that R.M. retain items at sorting office for 15 working days before being returned to sender - and presumably they would be back from holiday before then.

However, even R.M. will often try to leave items with neighbours, so same thing may have happened.  In fact, they are rolling out their trial of leaving items with neighbours - unless the person at the

address opts out of the scheme.
